Galletta’s 2007 Race #2: 6/10/2007 50-Lapper:

Chris ChrusherComix wins!

Chris “ChrusherComix” Stevens (posing with his #1 fan & wife, tower camerawoman Rungnapha “Au” Stevens) wins an exciting 50-Lap Feature event. (Sorry we had to Mosaic out Chris’s #1 sign, as he accidentally used the wrong finger!) Fourteen drivers were on hand and eleven qualified for the feature. Chris was followed by Gary Miller, Matt Stevens, Wesley “Ogre” Stevens, and Nick Dann. The race finished at 9:33pm and will finish earlier next week (I know some of you get a little cranky when we get out late, so we’re making timing improvements every week). Here are some lo-res snapshots from the DVD (left).

Here are lo-resolution captures from the DVD:

The new Inaugural “20-Lap Rookie Race” was a complete success as it greatly improved the overall pace of the event by pitting the inexperienced racers against each other with tutelage and help from the experienced drivers overseeing the event. Wayne Milliken (Oz #11m) won and was followed closely by our usual flag-woman, the lovely Melissa Berry in the Galletta’s #10 (right)! In fact, two ladies participated in the rookie race, including Matt’s lovely girlfriend, Melissa Gabel. But Ms. Gabel unfortunately lost control of Matt’s backup (the Galletta’s #3) and retired before the race’s conclusion. Both plan to race again and will doubtlessly improve.

Polesitter Fred Collins (Galletta’s #7) led the Feature event early, challenged by Nick Dann (Dann #02), Oscar Berry (Oz #11), Chris Stevens (Galletta’s #8), and Matt Stevens (Galletta’s #33).

However, swooping low for one of his trademark daring 3-kart passes, Matt lost engine power momentarily and his brother Chris took advantage, taking the lead early and pulling away from the rest of the field (left). The scariest moment of the night was a crash involving Kyle Reuter, piloting his own Super-9 for the 1st time. Being a bit unstable due to a series of breaking wheels, Kyle slipped between turns 3 and 4, and was then used as a ramp by the #86 of Dick Dann. In the photo above (right), you can barely see the #86 go airborne. Discussions and additional photos from and about this race can be found here.

We were unable to get a clearer shot because both cameras were focused on the great 3-kart battle for the lead at that point, as Gary Miller (Miller #24) and Matt Stevens furiously chased Chris Stevens for the majority of the race (below).

As stated above, the race for the top three was very close. A couple of nasty bumps (that Matt has since repaired during the week) would sometimes disrupt the action, but a torrid pace ensued nonetheless.

But in the end, Chris pulled it off and got his first checker of the year. Two races in a row, Chris and Gary swapped 1st and 2nd, with Matt and Ogre getting 3rd and 4th. Discussions and additional photos from and about this race can be found here on our message board.

Chris Stevens poses with his beautiful wife Rungnapha “Aou” Stevens (a week before her 30th birthday) after his 1st win of 2007. Here Chris lets the wicked awesome local race coverage sites know what number he was today!

Galletta’s Go-Karts Exhibition at Oswego Speedway’s
Mixed-motor/Open Yard Kart Class on 6/15/2007:

In a surprise, we were invited back to race at Oswego Speedway‘s Dirt Track as a support class for theTobias Slingshots. Our treaded tires were banned from Oswego’s track in the off-season (because we rip their track up) but since most of our racers feel uncomfortable racing against guys with bigger motors anyways (their open class will allow 5.5hp, 6.5hp, and 7.5hp OHV motors with racing parts and even occasionally Racing Raptors as well – motors that we banned from our class in the spirit of fairness), none of us ran to buy any slicks. Well, since the Slingshots were ripping the track up anyway, we were invited back with our class standard tires and had a great time.

Oswego Speedway Yard Kart class starting lineup.
Here we are lining up for the 12- lap heat. Matt Stevens (in the Galletta’s #33 with a stock 5hp Briggs) drew the pole and won it followed by Mike Billion (in his #57 with a 5.5hp Honda), Chris Stevens (in the Galletta’s #8 with a 5hp Briggs), and Wesley Stevens  (in the Galletta’s #4 with a 5hp Briggs).

Oswego Speedway Yard Kart class starting lineup.
Here is the starting grid for the 35- lap feature event. Matt Stevens (in the Galletta’s #33 with a stock 5hp Briggs) passed several competitors and won it followed polesitter Wesley Stevens  (in the Galletta’s #4 with a 5hp Briggs), Mike Billion (in his #57 with a 5.5hp Honda OHV), and Chris Stevens (in the Galletta’s #8 with a 5hp Briggs). Mark Miller (with his #00 with a Briggs 6.5hp OHV[?]) and Dick Dann (in the Dickhead #86 with a 5hp Briggs) spun and crashed across the finish line after that.

Winner Matt Stevens & Melissa Gabel!
Here is your winner, Matt Stevens, sweeping the heat and the feature in his Silver Bullet #33, the first time it has ever made the journey to Oswego Speedway. He won two races there last year in his old Galletta’s #3 (which was driven last week at Galletta’s by his girlfriend, Melissa Gabel, seen here). We love racing with the guys that use bigger motors, but we always wish that they’d make smaller karts with stock 5hp Briggs to race on our course as well. We plan to make it back to Oswego Speedway’s track once we can get our hands on some affordable slicks that match our stagger ratio, but due to our budget, busy schedules, and some of our regulars being against having to use slicks and race against bigger motors, we’re unsure exactly how long this will take to gather up enough of our guys with slicks to run regularly. We videotaped the event and took many pictures and it came out great! It’ll be on next week’s DVD, as I’ll couple it with our scheduled Sunday, 6/17/2007 race. Pre-orders, let me know! Also, I’ll try to upload more photos later, but only per request. However, all pics are on the DVD. Discuss this race here on the message board!
