Galletta’s Karting Club – ’10 Season, Event #14 – Sunday, Sept. 5th, 2010:
Arnold "AJ" Nason won the 1st feature at Galletta's in the Hammerd/Nason #35, while the 2nd feature went to Tim Galletta in the Sid Harvey/Galletta #54.
2010 Season, Event #14- Sunday, September 5th, 2010  Pre-Classic Twin-30s Night:Arnold “AJ” Nason picked up his 1st feature win at Galletta’s in the Hammerd/Nason #35, while the 2nd feature went to Tim Galletta in the Sid Harvey/Galletta #54. Both karts were formerly owned and driven by father-and-son team of Dick & Nick Dann, who could not accomplish this feat in their tenure of drivers (albeit with Galletta’s rebuilds and one new motor). Shadoe Russell, unfortunately, has had around 69 lead laps in the past two weeks, but has come up short twice via late-race restarts. This race was originally scheduled for Monday because of Sunday being the Oswego Speedway’s International Classic 200, but since that was re-scheduled to Monday due to rain, Sunday became our race date, just like back in 2006! Confusing, I know, but it’s how we roll, son. AJ also noticed Randy mocking him in the above victory photo, so he had a little payback in the commentary (albeit a little excessive, IMO, but all good-natured fun).
The 2010 15th Annual Galletta’s Karting Klassic 200: We are contemplating dates for our Klassic. Saturday, September 18th, 2010 is one possible date (not as likely), the other being Saturday, October 2nd, 2010 (more likely). Please let Chris and Matt know what date that you prefer. The date that the most possible drivers can attend is the date we will wish to select. We would like an early Saturday afternoon if humanly possible.
Per usual, other than posing pictures, all in-action race snapshots are screen captures directly from our weekly race DVDs, which document the entire race from usually two camera angles, usually are anywhere between 1 – 2 & 1/2 hours, and are only $5 each, in higher quality resolution than our YouTube vids which they are made from. Just like the donations that run all of the karts, all proceeds go back into the club (in this case the DVD-Rs and the website). Every regular season race has been videotaped since mid-2005-and-up, and every Galletta’s Karting Klassic has been videotaped since 1998-and-up. Order any DVD directly from Chris (email, phone, in-person, mail) anytime.
1st 30-LAP FEATURE EVENT:
Since Oswego Speedway’s Classic was postponed until Monday, we worked on the track and finally decided to run late Sunday, leaving only 8 competitors ready and able to make it (at least one was working and three didn’t have their karts ready). And usually, if we have less than 10 drivers, we run twin-30s and no heats. Also, congrats to George Russell debuting a new motor — another Matt Stevens-built power-plant — placed on the Galletta’s #6 until his own kart is built. This also reserves the ride for George and it can only be driven by him unless you have his permission. Tim Galletta and Randy Platt already did this earlier this season.
Due to not having a second camera-person (because he stayed indoors to watch the NASCAR race), we got less than 1 hour of footage, which means the DVD video will not be finalized until next weekend’s festivities. This also means no “in-action” video captures from the DVD until after that as well. Here are, however, the results:
Arnold "AJ" Nason #35 wins on 9/5/2010 at Galletta's in Oswego, NY
AJ Nason, from Cortland, NY — who camped out at Galletta’s for both the Oswego Speedway Supermodified Classic 200 and the weekly race at Galletta’s — started handicapped on the pole and took all 30 laps en route to his 1st win at Galletta’s. AJ has raced and won features at methanol karts and pure stock dirt cars in the past, but this is his 1st in a Galletta-type kart. Unfortunately due to him camping out, his wife and family missed his 1st win, so it was the only bad note for ol’ Arnold. He was challenged by son-and-father team of Shadoe and George Russell until both spun separately in the slick 2nd turn (the reason for the late start was getting that race-able).

2nd 30-LAP FEATURE EVENT:

Tim Galletta #54 wins on 9/5/2010 at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

Tim Galletta emerged as the winner of the 2nd 30-lapper — his 3rd career win at the track built by his cousins and named after his grandfather. However, the race commanders were again the son-and-father team of Shadoe and George Russell, as they were 1-and-2 for 23 of the 1st 24 laps until George got sideways momentarily in turn-4, which then made 3rd-place Chris Stevens accidentally help him over, with 4th-place Matt Stevens right there to be collected. When George, Chris and Matt went to the rear, it set up a chaotic finish, where Shadoe initially started too fast in the caution lap, and when he slowed down, Tim Galletta pulled alongside Doe, brushing tires in the front stretch, and finally ending with Doe spinning in the drying, yet still slightly slick 2nd turn.

In hindsight, race starter Wesley “Ogre” Stevens should have thrown the yellow for a terrible start, but since he did not, Shadoe unfortunately lost out after leading so many laps in the last two weekend of racing. The correct start is  (1) all must stay in line, (2) leader sets the pace, but not go full speed until (3) his bumper crosses that line in 4. And finally, (4) once the leader’s front bumper crosses that line, anybody can attempt a pass.

Doe is likely due to get his win soon enough though, as he is the only regular driver who has not yet won a feature this season, and thus will be handicapped up front again due to our points system. Passing opportunities were limited due to the lower grove being a bit slick, which made for a poor night of racing for the usual master-of-the-low-groove Matt Stevens, and enabled Chris to score enough points to take a narrow lead in the point standings. The chase is looking good as we get closer and closer to the 15th Annual Galletta’s Karting Klassic 200 – the traditional points finale for the largest and longest-running weekly dirt karting series in Oswego, NY.
