Our "Away" track: Oswego Kartway!Welcome! We are a highly competitive Karting Club that races affordable “Clockwise Gas Stocker” karts for a Points championship every summer at Galletta’s Greenhouse Backyard Kartway and a Gas Stocker division at Oswego Speedway‘s Clay Kartway.

This website covers the Galletta’s Karting club, which is a group of racing-modified yard karts founded in in the early 1990s. We race exclusively box-stock 5hp flathead Briggs & Stratton 90’s-and-up style motors without any racing parts, shaved heads, and run on pump gas-only. We are also staggered to turn right instead of left due to the single-wheel drive system found on most yard karts. This enables us to corner faster without using a live axle like found on WKA-style karting leagues. We document our race descriptions, points standings, and video captures from our DVDs. When we venture to Oswego Kartway, we also record the other karting divisions (includes WKA Junior, WKA Medium, WKA Heavy, Open Motor Karts, Gas Stocker, and Champ karts) as seen in the below pictures and also include them in our DVDs:

The Galletta’s Karting Club is thrilled to announce that Oswego Kartway is now separating the Gas Stocker engine classes. This is the exciting news that we have requested since opening day of Oswego Kartway in 2006, as now we now should be able to get more of our Galletta’s Karting Club members to return to the track and race under an even playing field. Our goal is to run under the Galletta’s Karting Club Motor and Setup Rules. More details to come in the future as they develop. What led to the change, you may ask? The last two Gas Stocker shows ran at Oswego, where the two motors were proving to be entirely unequal. Details to the final mixed-motor show and the reason for splitting the class are now below:

OSWEGO KARTWAY GAS STOCKER KARTING 2008 RACE #6
~ June 19th, 2008 Race at Oswego Speedway ~
6.5hp OHV motors banned from Galletta's flathead 5hp class rules
After the last two Oswego shows, the Galletta’s Karting Club determined that it will no longer race their 5hp flathead karting class at Oswego against 6.5hp OHV “open” motors. All Galletta’s Kart Club members and drivers have unanimously voted that the three 6.5hp karts disqualified themselves out of our division by not staying stock; allegedly using Briggs Animal takeouts and other aftermarket racing parts, hence making an incredible leap in speed and power visible to all racing and in attendance. It is now simply undeniable that they have abused their 1.5hp weight handicap (that we graciously allowed them when racing us) and disrespectfully went too far with enhancements. The Galletta’s Karting Club has had motor rules for well over a decade now, and all active members voted unanimously to race at Oswego ONLY if they allow us to use them there as well. Any further races at the track for us will have to be in a Galletta’s motor rule stocker 5hp motor division, which we have requested countless times since day one of racing there in 2006, and have been denied every time. When we can talk enough of our guys back to Oswego and have healthy fields like we started with in 2006 and the 2007 Classic, then we can and will run there again. None in the Galletta’s Kart Club dislike anybody in the 6.5hp group, as they are all passionate and competitive racers, but we feel that it has been unfair to us because they were allowed 1.5hp more than everyone in the Galletta’s Club, and a lose/lose scenario to them – either they just beat guys because they have bigger motors, or they lose to guys in smaller motors. There’s no win in the scenario for them either.

(Left) The heat race began on a slick track due to some passing showers. If anything, this exacerbated the problem with the power difference between the 6.5hp OHV engine and the 5hp flathead engine, as the three OHV motors quickly passed all of the 5hp karts in record time and pulled away within a few laps. (Right) Multi-time Galletta’s (stock part 5hp flatheads) champions Matt and Chris Stevens were nearly a half track behind the OHV karts before the heat was even over. Chris Stevens felt extremely disrespected by what the Galletta’s Club was forced to run against now, and when he let his brother by, yelled “Yeah, these motor types are real even, Jim!” and drove into the pits after the checker, he was reprimanded by Oswego Track Operator for doing so, who stuck his fingers at Chris and was extremely confrontational. He, in fact, threw Chris out, but since the Galletta’s Club came together in the same truck and trailer, Chris had nowhere to go and stayed in the Galletta’s Team pit. Eric Raponi (6.5hp #83) won, followed by Joe Hayden (6.5hp #5), Dave Melfi (6.5hp #22), Buddy Cottom (5hp #7), Matt Stevens (5hp #33), Chris Stevens (5hp #8), Russ Hockey (6.5hp #00), and Oscar Berry (5hp #11).

The feature started minus Chris Stevens, who protested the larger motors. (Left) Again, much like the heat, the three 6.5hp OHV motors quickly blew by the 5hp Flatheads and pulled away, lapping two flathead motors within a few laps, and Russ Hockey drove off the track, infuriated in protest when the OHV karts lapped him a second time and stood with Chris. (Right) Eric Raponi hit a tire onto the track, and Buddy Cottom did a handstand to avoid flipping the Galletta’s #7 and bought out the caution.

Only then was Matt able to stay within sight of the 6.5hp open motors, but not challenge them. Matt was tearing the track up, clearly with less horsepower, but staying with the Outlaws! And incredible feat for Matt to even hang with them, but definitely not fair. Even Matt, who is always very quiet and LOVES a challenge, finally said enough is enough with the display they pulled. The racing enhancements have succeeded, and the Galletta’s Club pulled out of the class in protest. The final order of finish was: Dave Melfi (6.5hp #22), Joe Hayden (6.5hp #5), Eric Raponi (6.5hp #83), Matt Stevens (5hp #33), Buddy Cottom (5hp #7), Oscar Berry (5hp #11), and finally the protesting Russ Hockey (5hp #00) and the Did-Not-Start Chris Stevens (5hp #8).

NOTES: Part-time Galletta’s driver and full-time Methanol driver Kyle Reuter was watching at track side noted to Chris how the Outlaws sounded different, that they may have had work done  – definitely not box stock. All noted the sweet smell, that they clearly were using additives or even methanol. Russ Hockey noted that the Outlaws were extremely cocky, and mocked Galletta’s karts, saying things like “shove those shaved heads up your ass” and mocked Chris’ clipboard that he uses to write the starting lineups (WTF?! Huh?). Jim later cooled off, came over to Chris and acknowledged that the Outlaws clearly were doing something that was definitely overkill. He agreed that he’s been wrong, but told Chris he shouldn’t have yelled at the flagstand nor driven his kart through the pits (albeit at 5 mph). They shook hands. (If any driver/kart builder thinks that we at Galletta’s are whining, then consider this. What if YOU and/or YOUR SONS/DAUGHTERS were in a karting class where everyone else was allowed BIGGER MOTORS? And if you sped up your karts to compete, the next week THEY SPED THEIR UP EVEN MORE? Changing the very rules each and every week. Yeah, I thought so. So enough with the insults, Marsdung, and other snickerers.)

Joe Hayden #5 shot by Mike Johnson#83 Eric Raponi shot by Mike JohnsonEveryone in the Galletta’s Karting Club for years now has insisted that if their 5hp motors were on the OHV gang’s karts, they would NOT be doing what they were doing, and probably would be lapped themselves, which is why the Galletta’s Karting Club members, all to a man, are so disrespected and insulted when forced to race bigger motors. And Matt Stevens said, “No, it isn’t our gearing. If we used the gears that they were using, we would be much slower than we are right now.The gear that they are running proves the power differences between the two motors. Now that they figured that out, and did whatever they did to them, the power differential is #33 Matt Stevens shot by Mike Johnsonclear.” Dave Melfi #22 shot by Mike JohnsonChris Stevens said,“When those 6.5hps use Animal take-out parts, and our 5hp flatheads stay stock (minus shaved heads and a hot stock cam for heavier guys), we can’t match their power unless we make WKA-type enhancements to our 11 Galletta kart motors AND our 5-6 Visiting Galletta’s Club driver’s motors as well. This is not what our Galletta’s Kart Club rules are, and these were also never agreed to under the Oswego “Gas Stocker” namesake either. The motor differences only cause drama, accusations of cheating, and in-fighting, which will be avoided when the motor classes are split. Then they can have their “open” rules and put as much money as they want to into them. I’d like to see what would happen if they allowed three or four SBS cars to use Supermodified motors and see what the rest of the class would say about it. Most of our Galletta’s Club members stopped going mostly for that reason, and if we split the motor classes, many of them should be able to be talked back into racing at Oswego eventually. And it would help the 6.5hp guys, as they are in a lose-lose scenario: If they would win, then they just beat guys with smaller motors; and if they lose, then that means that they lost to guys with smaller motors.”

After the race, a meeting was held by track operator Jim Losurdo to determine the state of the class. Since the Galletta’s Karting club has 12-15 karts with equal flathead 5hps racing weekly at Galletta’s, we stick by our motor rules. The 6.5hp OHV gang has their motors and want to stick by them as well. Jim then wanted to mandate that everybody get a Box Stock Project Motor, which everybody in the Galletta’s kart class declined; It’s a good idea, but for a starter karting class, not an established class. Finally, Jim relented after the 6.5hp racers also requested two divisions, and is now finally going to grant our Karting Club’s wishes by splitting the class into two motor divisions: “6.5hp OHV Open” class and what would likely be a “Galletta’s rules 5hp flathead” class. This is exciting news for all Galletta’s 5hp karters; many of whom didn’t have a problem with any of the 6.5hp drivers, but felt shafted by the rule that forced them to run against bigger motors. This should make the class bigger and more competitive in the long run. Now here are the points, adjusted for the new scoring rules:
