Galletta’s Kart Club at John J. Galletta Memorial Kartway 7/6/2008:

Galletta's Kartway of Oswego, NY 7/6/2008 Winner - Ryan Coleman

The Independence Day 50 was held on July 6th, 2008. Flyin’ Ryan Coleman took his second straight feature of 2008, which was his third feature win at Galletta’s since his rookie 2007 season.

<-Free Previews. This disc contains the Galletta’s Independence Day 50 that was held on July 6th, 2008 at Galletta’s Kartway, and one of two camera angles of the July 10th, 2008 event atOswego Kartway (this includes all karting divisions – WKA flat kart classes, Champ karts, and Gas Stocker classes). 2 hours, 20 minutes. Price $6.

The first heat started off with showing just how loose the dry track was when Mike “MC” Howell nearly spun out, which caused a chain reaction having Buddy Cottom and Dick Dann to come together (get your mind out of the gutter, pervs). The race was a close one with many back and forth passes throughout and ended with MC Howell (Galletta’s #5) taking it followed by Gary Miller (Miller #24), Chris Stevens (Galletta’s #8), Buddy Cottom (Galletta’s #1), and Dick Dann (Dann #86).

Galletta's Karting - Heat 1 - Lap 1
The second heat started no better when the 7/4 Oswego Feature winner Nick Dann spun out from his pole position, which caused a chain reaction having Ryan Coleman flip over Nick and then land on top of Matt Stevens. Nick didn’t finish the heat as his kart needed repairs. The rest of the race was a close one between Ryan Coleman and Matt Stevens. Coleman took it (in the Galletta’s #9) followed by Matt (Galletta’s #33), Melissa Gabel (Galletta’s #3), and the DNF-ed Nick Dann (Dann #68).

alletta's Kartway of Oswego, NY 7/6/2008 start

The 50-lap feature race start. Again, all heat and feature starts are based on the Galletta’s scoring handicap system. Inverted by your points-per-race, with lowest-to-highest scoring drivers, then prior race-winners in back of them inverted by points and/or wins, and then 1st-time-drivers at the rear until they get a handle on things. This always makes for the fairest possible starts and some competitive racing action from start to finish. Because all the Galletta’s Karts are 5hp Briggs & Stratton flatheads with limited racing modifications, the racing is always close, and the action is usually bumper-to-bumper, wheel-to-wheel.

Opening of this week's Feature at Galletta's (Photobucket)
Mike “MC” Howell dominated the entire first half of the race leading from his handicapped pole position. It was MC’s best run since the 2007 Oswego Classic and 2007 Galletta’s Klassic.

Ryan Coleman leading Chris & Matt Stevens
However, Ryan Coleman used the newly rebuilt front bumper on the Galletta’s #9 to bulldoze into the lead, passing every driver on the track with the radically redesigned Galletta’s #9!

Ryan Coleman wins!
Ryan Coleman not only won, but pulled away in dominant fashion for his most convincing karting win to date.
MC, who retired from wrecking after leading for most of the race, gives them the checker. Ryan (Galletta’s #9) was followed by Chris Stevens (Galletta’s #4/started in Galletta’s #8), barely holding off Matt Stevens (Galletta’s #33), Buddy Cottom (Galletta’s #1), and Melissa Gabel (Galletta’s #3). Not finishing the race were Mike “MC” Howell (Galletta’s #5), Nick Dann (Dann #86/started in Dann #68), Gary Miller (Miller #24), and Dick Dann (Dann #86).

Post-Race Notes: The loose track led to more contact than usual and many drivers (and the property owner) complained of intentionally rough riding. Both the track and the contact will have to be corrected before our next race. After further discussion, any wrecks or hard pushes deemed to be avoidable and/or purposeful will be docked -5 points each occurrence, and -10 points after each occurrence that causes a caution and the offending party does not go to the rear.

Note: And after the race, Dick Dann, Nick Dann, Gary Miller, and Matt Stevens all HEAVILY formally complained about Ryan Coleman’s use of the new front bumper on the Galletta’s #9 to shove drivers out of his way en route to a win. In fact, your webmaster Chris was also nudged out of the way by Ryan as well, but the cases were more obvious when he shove-and-passed Gary and Matt. I called Ryan during the week to let him know that several guys complained, and Matt, who was shoved off of the track in turn 2, was particularly miffed about it, as when a push leads to a wreck, it can lead to injury. As a friend-and-family racing league with OPEN WHEELED vehicles, we frown on excessive bumping and shoving, especially in the turns, where people can wreck and get hurt. Ryan agreed that he was in the wrong, and stated that the brakes were not working and promised that he won’t do it again.

All karters are invited to bring your own gas stocker kart, or rent a Galletta’s backup and join us. Remember: At season’s end, both the Galletta’s Kart Speedway and Oswego Kartway Gas Stocker classes will be combined to decide the Clockwise 5hp Gas Stocker Championship of the world. Why the world? Because everybody else in the world uses methanol, different motor types, pours thousands of dollars into their karts, races counter-clockwise or road courses, and/or goes by WKA and/or other EXPENSIVE sanctioning rules. You will not find a cheaper nor more closely competitive motor racing class in the world. Guaranteed! Join us!
