8/18/2013 – Eric Woolworth wins his 2nd career Feature in the Raven Tavern #88!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 18th, 2013, OSWEGO, NY -  Eric Woolworth swept the night’s heat and feature in his Raven Tavern #88 by passing Dave Spanfelner in the early stages,  running away and hiding enough on late-charging Matt and Chris Stevens to collect his 2nd career win, both this season. 10 karts were used, and c’mon… we have so many open karts people. I guess it is true… people really do fear us as the best karters in Oswego and puss out on race day. Period. Word. Pass it. Do you think don’t want more people to beat? Think you're the $#!t because you race a kart at a pay track. Lolz. Bring it, son. All racers raced hard and had fun.  More details below...

Collin Morrison (Raven Tavern #78) Matt Stevens has heard the rumors for years. "He wins so much because he always has the best motor", or "puts more time into his kart." That's what they would always say. But the people who say this have been empirically disproved time and time again. Every single year, a handful of times per year, Matt hops into a Galletta's Arrive-and-drive kart that rookies and lesser-experienced drivers climb in, get last place (usually get lapped in or crash in) and give up racing with us complaining that the karts are shit and that we rig it. He then promptly slaps all who said he rigged wins in the past by hopping into the oft-laughed at Galletta's kart and proceeds to whoop ass in it. He does it so many times a year, but ignorance is bliss, and instead of honoring Matt's skills, they wuss out and stop racing with the best karter in Oswego. Again, this week was empirical evidence that such people are ignorant morons. Observe the heat race, where Matt decided literally a minute before race time to hop into the oft-ignored Galletta's Greenhouse #6 kart, and seemingly effortlessly going from 4th to 1st on the start of the race! Not on lap one... WITHIN SECONDS OF WHEN THE GREEN FLAG DROPPED! In fact, he hasn't even done that in his #3 or #33 this year. You know what that means? He gives the renters FASTER karts and STILL whoops them, and they actually think that their karts are slower! It's kind of like an inside joke we have at Galletta's, as all of the regular veterans are quite bored and want more competition... here, we'll give you a more powerful kart and still easily defeat you. Now think about it... this website is read all over the world, and I tell you now... you can find any driver on the planet - even the millionaire grand prix, IRL, NASCAR, or locally DIRT, Modified, SBS or Supermodified drivers, and certainly not the Kiddie track, as we've been there and dominated that track even against a large class motor for all 3 of our seasons there, incuding what is now the Sr. Clones, haha! - and not find anybody who can do that in these karts. He's that good. And his brother Chris is right there, too, as he has done it nearly as much. The stats don't lie. The bros have never pursued a career in other forms of racing, but they know if they did, they'd be up in the front of any class they got into. And the rest of our regular veterans are not slouches either! They are all pretty good too, just less experience under their belts and could do some things against the vast majority of the guys who think they're the $#!t because they race at a pay track. Please. Come out and race!   Okay, after the rant we see that Randy Platt (one of our excellent veteran drivers that I was talking about) hounded Matt in the rebuilt/repainted Brian Galletta/Plattnum #13, but the crankshaft bent on the last lap when he lost a chain. He passed the finish line, but not before getting passed at the line by Tumor. In the back, Collin Morrison and Zach Shurtliff did not qualify in the heat as Collin spun out too many times and crashed into Zach, and Zach did not spin, was off the pace. Learning exeriences, as both these kids could be good if they stick at it, but when the property owner does not want minors on the track, you MUST qualify by running a flawless race. If you spin or wreck, you will be allowed practice, but won't be allowed into the feature, where the racing is for serious adults. All racers raced hard. Finish: 1st. 45-LAP FEATURE

Remember, Galletta's Karting Club does NOT give into the silliness of WKA/NKA-type karting divisions (dividing karting classes harshly by weight, age and engine and DQing someone for being a lb. or two over), as we believe it's for babies, kids and hyper-sensitive girly men (works great for kids who are learning the racing game, but silly for adults). We have never liked that, it makes no true champion, and long nights of many small classes in many short races and a giant waste of money and a crappy show for the audience (you have to be the friend or family of one of the racers to even sit there and watch such overwhelming amount of 2-5 kart races). Matt Stevens designed a revolutionary system of power-and-gearing for weight. Lighter guys are weighed down a bit and have a less powerful gear than the heavy guys, who have no weight added and a more powerful gear or cam. Time trial speeds are VERY close, and our track is tough to pass on, despite the fact that we race VVEERRRRY clean because we are open wheel (fiberglass bodies are a handicap for weaker drivers, in our opinions). This, along with our handicap system that always progressively inverts the field by puts low-win/low-point scoring drivers in front and high-win/high-point drivers in the back, it means everyone has a shot and experience goes a looonnngg way. Proven by the fact that the 20-year karting experience Chris and Matt Stevens can hop into any kart and compete.  All racers raced hard. Start: 1st. Dave Spanfelner blasted from 4th to 1st in relatively short order with a great start in his DS Humphrey's #54. Dave looked unstoppable and looked like he was on his way to repeat his dominant feature win a couple of weeks ago. photo 20130818-feature-3-eric-takes-lead_zpsc0c9b6d1.jpg However, Eric Woolworth got the pass on Dave Spanfelner after the #54 started to slow down and get loose going into the turns, especially turn 1, where people behind him had to brake to avoid slamming him off the track. Once Eric got by, it was bye bye, and went about taking a half track lead after a bit. photo 20130818-feature-ds-chris-matt-battle-1_zpsc4043246.jpg Matt (Galletta's #6) and Chris (Galletta's/Chrusher.com/R&C Sushi #8) did their usual bit - passing each other back and forth trying to get by people. Usually, whichever brother gets up to the front all but clinches a win, and the bros have done this battle more times than anybody knows through the years. Here the DS Hump's #54 was a shade off due to being loose going into the turns, but Dave still drives hard enough to hold pretty much anybody off. The bros swapped 3rd and 4th all night trying to get Dave while trying very hard not to smash into him in the turns (very dangerous to do). photo 20130818-feature-ds-chris-matt-battle-2_zpsbe1562a6.jpg Finally, after many laps, Chris was able to get a really good run alongside Dave and... photo 20130818-feature-ds-chris-matt-battle-3_zps7f3edd8d.jpg ...execute a pass at the end of the front strech, clearing the #54 and moving into 2nd. photo 20130818-feature-ds-screws-chris-4_zps5f1a70f7.jpg But after Chris got the pass, Dave then ran into Chris in turn 2 and hooked the #54's front bumper into the #8's back bumper, enabling that tricky Matthew to shoot under the both of them to take the lead. Much like 2 weeks ago when a couple of rookies took a wallop, it seems Dave drives a little quicker in turn 1 when someone's back bumper is in front of him! Hmmm.... Maybe starter Wesley should keep an eye on that instead of staring at Brian Galletta's #42 with disdain and hatred! ;)

[Edit: Dave was upset with the webpage and feels it unjustly portrayed him and made him look bad. However, nothing could be further than the truth.  I already apologized to him in our private group discussion. No malice was intended, and I, the webmaster (Chris), was simply documenting the race, and in case people missed it, in my usual tongue-in-cheek (see the little ;) ?) that I have always done since 2005 on this website. We cover the races, and we are almost a parody of other racing... and I do go out of my way to try and add humor to my pages. I covered a wreck where a position changed, and apparently, my usual humor did not go over well with Dave. This was his response:

"I was handling like shit! Chris got by but went high. If you look at pic Matt and I are on same line, Chris is a bit out of shape. He is blaming me and saying Ogre needs to watch me. I have tried since day one to let racing go on if I can't keep up. I have waved Matt on by and in this race fingered the person banging the shit out of me ( as I am sure is on DVD if it ever gets done)."

Chris's response:

"Firstly, the #8 is never out of shape. I've never lost control and spun that thing out in 10 years of racing that kart regularly (including on TWO tracks for three years). The only time it has ever wrecked, spun out, it is because someone dumped, rammed or wrecked me. Period. 100% true. One can view every single video we've ever raced (including pretty much every time I've ever raced that kart!) and see that is the case. In fact, it has been loose as heck at rare times (occasionally at Oswego Kartway and the stagger was so completely off in the Galletta's 2008 Klassic 200 after a tire change that it drove sideways and pushed around the whole track for 150 laps and I STILL GOT F***ING THIRD PLACE!) and I STILL never wiped out in it. I have FULL control of that kart unless someone takes that away from me by ramming/crashing/hooking/dumping me. Period. That is why it is my go-to starter kart. It handles very well. If Dave thinks I purposefully/intentionally rammed him, he is wrong. If I bumped him unintentionally, I don't recall doing it, but if I did, I wasn't the only one, as Matt and myself - in a battle for the points lead - were passing each other back and forth in back of Dave and trying to get by him, so it wasn't just me behind him. If one or both of us bumped/pushed him, it is usually Matt trying to push someone by me or to help them hold me off, or vice versa, but not an intentional effort to wreck anybody or piss them off. It was all clean racing the whole time we were in back of him. However, when I was finally able to get past Dave (and in doing so, I blasted back into the top groove, in full control, and never out of shape) and he clearly floored it into my back bumper and hooked me. Normally, I would say it was a racing deal, everyone driving hard and bumpers got hooked. It happens and it's not cause for concern most of the time. However, Dave has always bumped me every time I've ever passed him since his rookie season. While it is a part of racing, and occasionally accidental, when it happens EVERY time, one can only believe it's done on purpose maliciously, or a lack of racing skills - if you have a run on someone, you should be doing one of two things: using brakes to avoid ramming someone or going in a different line to attempt to pass them. Ramming them only slows YOU down, speeds THEM up, and POTENTIALLY causes a wreck. If he flipped off somebody (meaning me) and let somebody by (meaning Matt), maybe he should pay closer attention to who bumped him and who didn't, and stop altering a CLOSE points race [between two brothers who have been passionately racing each other hard (and 99% clean, haha) for over twenty years] that he statistically is not within range of beating. And here I even stuck up for him in the 2012 Klassic when he blocked me and Matt passed me, then where Matt crashed into him when I tried to get him back later in the race. A lot of thanks I got. Oh well, if he is truly THAT mad, all I can say is good luck in the pay track divisions where they won't try to help you as much as they will attempt to outspend you. Oh, and bump the living crap out of you if you block them for one lap, let alone twenty." 

Well, here is a clip from the DVD/Blu-ray. For many laps before this clip, Chris and Matt passed each other back and forth behind Dave, but not hitting him, other than a few unintentional bumps as they passed each other back and forth. My website has always been of both coverage of our races and also at times humorous. I am sorry if this offended David, as it was not my intent. But all kidding aside, my brother and I, who have been racing these karts and on this track since the 1990s (and on the other pay track in Oswego for three years) do feel that ramming in turn 1 on our track is dangerous, and we must all give each other good space, particularly in turn 1. The reason it was put on the website was NOT to single out Dave, but because of the bumper hookup, several positions changed - Chris got passed by Matt, Matt passed Dave and Chris, Dave got passed by Matt and Adam, and Adam passed Dave... all because of one bumper hookup. Whenever I can, I always post crucial moments of races like this. We also feel that if Dave feels like this is a reason to be angry, verbally express a physical threat (saying that HE can ram CHRIS, but if CHRIS rammed HIM BACK [something I never do because I believe in using that energy and momentum to GET AROUND somebody and not THROUGH somebody like a mental midget with anger issues], there would be some kind of confrontation and implied that it would may be a physical one!? Okay, that's logical...), and QUIT the club, then there is nothing we can do about it. Nobody ever called him out nor kicked him out, but if he cannot control his anger or his kart enough to not ram people who pass him clean, maybe he should not race karts until his anger issues and kart handling issues are corrected. If he feels that the late starts are a reason (due to late arrivals, no-shows, and drivers who need an hour or two to have their karts race-ready) to be extremely angry and blast the club  co-founders/co-racers, one of which is the head mechanic/track operator, and the other who is the statistician/video producer/webmaster/promoter/organizer, then, again, there is nothing we can do. The club runs on both Matt and Chris' contributions, but it cannot run with both of the brothers AND enough drivers to join them on the track. If someone wants to get angry and quit the club and blame us for a collective problem, then, again, there is nothing we can do. He would not be the first passionate driver who quit the club for various reasons and unfortunately, he will likely not be the last one to do so, as you can see here.

PS - And no, I've never blocked his IP address. I don't know it, and if I did, I only have reason to block people who have malicious intent against us, not just disgruntled drivers.

PPS - In closing... absolutely EVERYONE here loved Dave. We thought of him like an uncle... and he was really an uncle to a few of the guys (Tim, Justin and Joe). A big, fair-minded, smart, jolly but tough guy and a good friend to have and a fun guy to race with. Which is why we all are stunned, saddened, and feel betrayed that he blew up on Chris for this harmless webpage, acted like he wanted to fight people (or watch people fight?), and left our club like this. It showed a side of Dave we never knew. Every race has bumps and wrecks. Every form of racing has delays due to weather and things out of race director's control. There's controversy involved when people are racing for the same spot and every spot counts in a tight points race. This website reports the races, and the YouTube videos show it in unedited form (I upload the COMPLETE race videos. If it isn't on there, then the camera missed it). There was no ill intent. Not mean to mock or point out flaws. It's racing! Happens ALL the time. Not enough people read the website to get upset. In fact, the people who get upset then say nobody reads the website, so why get upset in the first place?! I've been told this many times by the people who get mad. Why get mad then? It's all in fun and love of the sport! He later told Matt he quit because the timing. He told Matt he divorced his otherwise perfect wife because of her lateness. Apparently, punctuality means more than anything else to him. Well, as a backyard club, and we don't race until we have enough people on track. We can time it as good as we can, if nobody shows, we can't race. If to many people show, the race is slowed down. Sometimes we wait too long and nobody shows. Sometimes people who do show up on time occasionally are late. Sometimes people who race every week quit. We're a small group of 3 people, (almost never more than 12 people counting visitors who rarely to even help, just race and leave), and we can only do what we can do. We do not have a staff of a dozen or so people... it's just us. Usually, just Matt, Chris and Wes. And we have day jobs AND other hobbies. It's sad, but he made his own choice and left on his own accord. Nobody here banned him. He probably won't be back because of hard feelings made during the controversy, but it was nothing we did to him. It was his own choice. Sadly, other than apologizing (which we did) and editing the website to tell his side of the story (which we did), there's nothing more we could do.

Matt caught Eric with a few laps to go, and although - the ultimate test - traffic was coming, Eric held off Matt's challenges to take both his 2nd win of his career AND of the year in the former Larry Phillips' L&K Small Engine #04, now the Raven Tavern #88. Good job Eric... who has been feast or famine all year... one week looks smooth with a fast and capable kart, the next few weeks looks inconsistent and his karts break. All racers raced hard. Nobody reads the website. Nobody cares about the points, so why don't we erase them now? The only reason we race is to have fun going in a circle and let Matt win because he works on the karts and ramming people is now legal because, well, it's not dangerous and nobody is gonna' get pissed or hurt ever. And everyone can either not show up or show up late and blame Chris because... he... polished his helmet shield... after doing the points and setting up the lineups. Oooooo-kay.
