Saturday, August 12th, 2017 – We didn’t have time to do the victory photo, race descriptions, points and complete editing on the video yet, but we did have time to upload the complete unedited video on this playlist and embedded above. Enjoy the race footage as if you had a seat in the tower (complete with an instant replay of a flip and crash)! 🙂

Saturday, August 12th, 2017 – Tim Galletta and Chris Stevens pretty much controlled almost the entire evening, each getting 1-2 and vice versa respectively. Tim shook off the rust accumulated due to a move down south and then held off everyone for his 1st feature win in a few years during the 1st feature. Then Chris Stevens evaded an accident that took out the top three to coast to the win in the 2nd. Plus, during the 1st feature, Tim’s bro-in-law (and past feature winner — a 14-driver race from 2010! C’mon people, let’s race!) Jared Halstead took a nasty spill after coming together with Josh Arnold, flipped, and then got run over by Matt Stevens. Thankfully, he was fine and continued in the 2nd feature. Good racing all around, but there’s an attendance problem when we have to depend on people who live in North Carolina to have enough people to race. Um… what the heck is going on? Complete YouTube race video and points are done so read on for more…

Alarmingly low racer attendance again. It’s fairly suspicious that the most dependable drivers have to come in from several states away. So much for Oswego being a “racer” town (… unless one means noise pollution vehicles speeding on the road, protesting the local speedways because they can’t win enough to pay for their race cars, or spending a few grand on a kart for 3-minute cattle herd races on little bitty tracks, I guess? Kind of odd. Oh, wait… I’m being the bad guy again. Or so I’ve been told at least. People don’t come because…? I point out on my website that drivers don’t come. Okay. Hmm, okay, I’ll Shhh….).

Jared Halstead’s nasty flip (Click to enlarge)

* Note: For some reason, Jared Halstead incorrectly started in front of Josh Arnold and Matt Stevens. His handicap starting spot was intended to be in back of them, as he is a returning veteran (he is impressively a past feature winner with limited races under his belt, but his 1st race in over half a decade). Instead of penalizing Josh and Matt, bonus point laps will be counted as if the #43 was lapped traffic. Jared will also get a mandatory penalty for incorrect position on a start or restart. It wasn’t his fault, as he probably did not know where he was supposed to start. When this happens, the starter has to be notified before the green flag drops.

As anybody who has been watching Galletta’s has seen, our karts and competition is extremely close and passing is very difficult. Usually, veteran drivers make the most passes, but even they have difficulty due to the very equalized speeds of the karts. Because of this, one of the leading ways of postion changes are spinouts, breakdowns and wrecks. On lap 5, Todd Halstead got loose in the rear turn and collected Josh Arnold, who collected Matt Stevens. If all three kept going, then nobody would have lost a position. But since the caution DID come out, all three went to the back. Judgement calls like this are always extremely difficult, but the usual rule is that if the caution comes out, then the karts that were involved in the caution need to go to the rear. (“Spin-to-avoid” or “off-the-track-to-avoid” karts are not to be penalized positions provided that they hit nothing while doing it). However, at the same time, if we let wrecks go, there would be occasional bump-and-go wrecks and people would start getting mad and wrecking inentional (which could lead to more broken karts, potential injuries, tempers flaring and occasional fights), AND not to mention how hard it is to pass that simply deftly avoiding wrecks is one of the leading ways passes get made at Galletta’s. We occasionally do “complete restarts”, but usually only when it’s the 1st lap and the contact was completely incidental and minor. The judgement calls are even harder to make when (1) it’s dark out and the cameras don’t catch the action as clearly, (2) the contact wasn’t terribly severe and some of the karts keep going without damage, and (3) we do not have a rear corner camera person, and a good deal of action happens back there (just look at our 2009-2012 videos that had the rear turn angle… great shots from out there!). That wreck would have been a good one to catch if we had a cam on it.

Scoring Notes: Starter Brian Galletta scored an extra lap in each feature, which actually changed the outcome (and points) quite a bit if you compare laps #25 and #26 in both features. Josh Arnold used a kart change/timeout in the 1st feature and got a -5 point penalty. Matt Stevens will be charged a -5 point mid-race timeout to adjust air pressure in his kart (timeouts are -5 points this year). As stated above, Jared Halstead started two positions higher than he was supposed to in feature #1 and will have mandatory -5 points deducted, but Josh was rewarded the bonus lap points as if the #43 was lapped traffic. Ugh, all these rules are tedious, I know, lol. But, there are rules we’ve been doing since the 1990s, so we’d be wrong to drop or change them just because they are so tedious.

Okay, so things are so poor for driver attendance this season that Melissa Stevens — who has basically taken 1 lap each weekend and pulled off for last place points — is 4th overall in points. That’s kind of scary sad for both our driver attendance and the drivers who have run several weeks of full races and are behind her. AND… people who live SEVERAL STATES AWAY are hundreds of points higher than the entire population of Oswego County, NY. Sad. Very sad, Oswego-area alleged “racers.”
