Brian J. Galletta: March 13, 1977 – December 25, 2019

In Memoriam of Brian J. Galletta

March 13, 1977 – December 25, 2019

With great regret and sadness, we wish to pass along the unexpected news that one of the original and longest-running members of our karting class has passed away. Brian Galletta was a 1st cousin to club founders Matt and Chris Stevens, a nephew of current Galletta’s Greenhouse owners Wes and Mary Stevens, a grandson of Galletta’s Greenhouse’s founder John Galletta, and family member and/or friend to many racers and spectators to our races here over the years, his favorite being his brother Kevin, who raced his karts for him after he retired.

Brian had medical issues related to kidney disease — including a kidney transplant in his youth and dialysis and seemingly countless related surgeries — throughout most of his life. Despite his health problems, he shook them off like they were nothing, something that always inspired us due to his bravery, cheerfulness, positivity, and unassuming toughness in the face of it. He was one of the 1st people to join our racing club in the early 1990s when it was only 1, 2, or 3 karts large, and basically, only his surgical procedures kept him away from racing on a weekly basis for decades like he wanted to.

Brian (and Matt) at Chris’ 5th birthday, May 22nd, 1979.

His brother Kevin Galletta is also a long-time racer as well, and after Brian injured his legs in a fall that sadly forced him to fully retire from racing, he maintained ownership of some of his karts and motors for his sibling to run weekly. Even when he could not race, he often would help flag, count laps, and cheer his brother on (along with occasional heckling of his cousin, yours truly, Chris).

Brian always brought a smile to everyone’s face, as he had a great sense of humor and would always see the bright side of almost any situation. He won a handful of races during his sporadic career, but he was also known for having the misfortune of being in many wrecks that he, himself found humor in and enjoyed showing to everyone — so much so that he requested the site have them all posted in one place. Thus, his driver profile collects links to his victories AND his crashes (nearly all with full race videos) per his request. He really could put a smile on our faces when he would bounce up from a crazy accident with a smile and a joke.

We at Galletta’s share profound grief and an overwhelming sense of loss and emptiness with everyone who knew him — friends and family alike. He is a rare soul, and we have no doubt he is smiling down from heaven with his no-worries smirk and making us smile. We will miss him greatly. God bless.

Visitation was Sunday, December 29, 2019, 1-3 PM at Nelson Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 3-3:30 PM. More info here.

In honor of Brian, enjoy his racing career — which he was quite proud of and found much enjoyment in — all written before his untimely passing:

Name:
Brian Galletta

Brian was one of the original Galletta’s Karters in the 1990s and has had an on-and-off race career, and his best stretch was between 2012-2014 when he collected all his feature wins. However, due to a few serious medical issues, he has had to retire from racing. He still is occasionally seen trackside cheering for his brother, who drives Brian’s karts for him.

Career Highlights, Profile & Victory Pictures, and… by request… hard wrecks:

Since Brian had retired, he sometimes reminisced about his WRECKS more than his wins! By request, here are a few of Brian’s best (or is it worst?) BEFORE his wins:

The Brian Galletta Crash Series – by request of… Brian Galletta:

We don’t often like to dwell on wrecks, but sometimes they are so spectacular, we can’t forget about them. And of these, there were many wrecks that Brian had in the 1990s-2000s (the early days of our club’s history) where we did not record every single race and thus only have only very vivid memories of the carnage that we will try to paint for you.

  • He had one in the 1990s where he crashed into a metal mesh fence retaining wall under the race tower in turn 1, and it left his literal body imprint (head and shoulders) in the fence, broke 2×4 boards bracing the fence up to the tower, and mangled the steering wheel so badly on the Galletta’s #1 kart that it was considered a trophy.
  • Another one happened–again, sometime in the 1990s–in turn 3 where he flipped off the track and was left laying on his back, immobile between turns 3 & 4. The race stopped immediately as we all rushed to Brian’s side, fearing he was unconscious or worse. He sprung up like the WWE’s Undertaker, leaving us wanting to deliver some wrestling moves upon him for scaring us to into a near panic! But that’s Brian’s sense of humor that we all love.
  • One wreck in the early 2000s occurred during a practice session where he and Randy Platt were racing a little harder than they should have considering it wasn’t actually a race. Brian flipped and one of the mufflers tattoo burned itself on his lower leg. Ouch.
  • Another occurred when the kart that Brian was driving inexplicably drove into the infield coming down the front stretch, leaving Brian flying over the burn between turns 1 & 2. A comical sight for sure, but unfortunately, no video.

But there are more where we did have the video!

9/17/2011 – Brian gets “Moustrapped” and “Violated” by his #28 kart!

 "Ow! Butt hurt!"

Brian Galletta, driving his new purchase – the Platt-itute #28 built by his buddy Randy Platt – snapped the drivewheel axle bolt at the weld and went for a wild flip in turn 1. In the video, you can hear it rumbling before it enters the video’s frame, then we see it. BOOM! Below is the video:

The drive wheel wanted to keep going though, as it drove halfway down the back stretch! Brian was okay, but was violated inappropriately by a weight bar on the #28 (which says, “Take it!” and ,”Muthaf***ah’” on it), which may lead it to be added to the Sex Offender List. Seriously, despite the fact that the kart is wicked fast, it badly needed a lot of weld reinforcements, which it got before the 2011 edition of the Galletta’s Klassic 200. More info here.

9/15/2012 – “It Felt Like A Samoan Wrestler Landed On My Lap! 45” +YouTube

Meanwhile, during the September 15th, 2012 race, Brian Galletta lost control and veered into the hot pit gate. However, in a lesson for all, a kid (nephew of one of the drivers) was seated in a lawn chair too close to the track and got clobbered, landing in Brian’s lap, scared, a little shaken up, but… THANK GOD… unharmed. It’s not terribly clear due to the VHS-to-DVD-to-YouTube transfers, lighting, and camera angle, but it’s all we got of it. We did our best to magnify and brighten it up as well:

“Now I know what it’s like to feel a Samoan Wrestler land on your lap.”
– Brian Galletta, Making us laugh as usual.

Lesson… DO NOT STAND OR SIT TOO CLOSE TO A RACE TRACK WITHOUT ADEQUATE SHIELDING AND/OR SAFE PROTECTION!  Especially when Brian is on the track!!! 😉 Thanks!

8/18/2013 – Brian Galletta’s Steering Column breaks leading to funny wreck during Eric Woolworth’s 2nd career Win!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 18th, 2013, OSWEGO, NY –  Eric Woolworth swept the night’s heat and feature in his Raven Tavern #88. All racers raced hard and had fun, one guy got mad and left because of our website coverage. Oh, and Brian Galletta had another funny wreck! More here.

7/19/2014 –  Chris Stevens gets CRUSHED as Randy Platt wins his Return Feature in Galletta’s Greenhouse #5! (+YouTube)

In this one, Brian Galletta and Adam Lytle hook wheels in the back stretch. Adam then hit a burn on the inside of the track and ricocheted through the air and landed on Chris Stevens, which gave him a nickel-sized puncture wound straight to his shin bone (that required a tetanus shot) and severely bruised his ribs. Chris insists that if he was not wearing protective rib gear AND armored knee pads, he would have been hospitalized… and possibly worse. Chris INSISTS that everyone wears as much protective gear as possible, as he has walked away (albeit in pain) from accidents like this and not need an ambulance ONLY because he had racing armor on. As it was, Chris was unable to complete the following week’s race and has had a scar on his shin that still exists years later.

Difficult to see from Matt Stevens’ helmet camera (which unfortunately does not pick up the parts not directly lighted by the track), so it is somewhat difficult to see.), but the #42 of Brian Galletta and #33c of Adam Lytle come together down the back stretch. The #33c is shot backwards and comes to a rest on the #8 of Chris Stevens’ bumper. In a strange coincidence, Lytle’s #33c caught a very small burn in the back stretch (that used to be a big bush tree of some sort years ago) which spun and launched his motor and drive-wheel (with Lytle weighing it down) at around 30+MPH on Chris’ leg and chest.

6/7/2014 – 19th Annual Season Opener early leader Brian Galletta gets into DEVASTATING crash, then T-Boned by cousin Matt Stevens!

Brian has always been a hard racer… who sometimes gets into hard wrecks. Ouch!

Brian Galletta, in his newly rebuilt #42 krt, hunts down Eric Woolworth like a dog and passes him in a most aggressive manner.

SATURDAY, JUNE 7TH, 2014, OSWEGO, NY – The original, longest-running, and most experienced karting class in Oswego, NY began it 19th point season, and it was another tremendous, highly-skilled battle from front to back and start to finish. Melissa Stevens, Adam Lytle, Eric Woolworth and Brian Galletta all took turns leading. Kelly Miller, Matt Stevens and Chris Stevens battled back and forth all night behind them. But after then-leader Brian Galletta’s brand-new #42 plowed into the 1st turn wall (when his left front hub imploded) taking out 3rd place Matt Stevens as well, Eric Woolworth held off defending track champ Chris Stevens for the rest of the way for a triumphant win. A kart that he sold to a newbie in 2013, bought it back (for a measly $110?! The motor alone was worth more than that!), and was a rocket-ship with a replaced drive tire with an experienced driver at the helm. More points, pictures and details are here, son!

6/26/2015 – Adam Lytle gets powerbombed by his kart (which erupts into flames) as Matt Stevens Steals BOTH Twin-35s thanks to Ogre’s new NO Passing Flag Rule!

FRIDAY, JUNE 26TH, 2015, OSWEGO, NY – The highlight right at the start of this video, we see Brian Galletta and Adam Lytle catch tires, which send Brian into the starter stand and Lytle into the infield, collecting Eric Woolworth with him. Lytle was literally powerbombed by his kart (sustaining a concussion), and his kart erupted into flames.

There are more (although not quite as fantastic), and as we find them, we’ll add them accordingly.

Career Highlights, Profile & Victory Pictures

However, Brian has accomplished more than wrecks. He is one of the all-time leading point-scoring racers in our track’s history and has scored a handful of wins and top Klassic time-trialer awards along the way. Here are some of his career highlights:

2016 – Brian as Cameraman & Announcer

Brian retired from racing in 2016 due to accumulated health issues but filled in as an emergency cameraman when our usual camera operator Rung “Aou” Stevens was in Thailand with her ill parents (who later both died days apart in May 2018 when she was 8-months pregnant with her and Chris’ 2nd daughter and unable to fly to see them). Brian didn’t actually announce the races that he helped record per se, but he did occasionally make some humorous commentary — such as his friend (and ex-fiance) smelling like soup, and professing his anger when his brother got in a wreck.

2015

Due to accumulated health problems (including dialysis sessions, repeat concussions and a recent devastating fall down a flight of stairs that caused massive damage to his knees), Brian has officially retired from the sport he loves — Galletta’s Karting. Brian is often seen at the track on race day, usually cheering on his brother, who drives his #28 kart, heckling yours truly (his cousin Chris), or trying to get someone to rebuild his other incomplete karts to field more drivers.

His final race was the 2015 Klassic 200, where he spent a good chunk of the race competing up front.

2014:

In 2014, Brian’s race season was plagued with general soreness and lack of strength due to complications from his dialysis sessions, and only ran a partial season, racing when he was physically up for it.

8/3/2014 – Brian Galletta wins the [Your Sponsorship Here] 45-Lapper in the Platt-Num-Galletta #28!
 photo 2014-08-03-brian-galletta-wins-in-28.jpg

SUNDAY, AUGUST 3rd, 2014, OSWEGO, NY –  1st-year driver Keith Raymond looked strong early, but after lapped traffic did him in, it was Brian Galletta who fought tooth and nail to hold off his cousins Chris and Matt Stevens en route to his 1st feature win of 2014. He also snapped the Galletta’s Greenhouse #5’s victory streak at 3 straight wins with 3 straight drivers – although it did score a very close 2nd with Chris Stevens who tried to be the 4th driver in 4 weeks to take 4 wins, but came up just short when he and bro Matt ran out of track space trying to slingshot their cousin at the stripe. As usual, we had 9 drivers but again missed a full field, as 5 rookies replaced 5 regular veterans who didn’t make it and missed a good one. Seriously, can we get that 20-kart race I have been clamoring for on this website for for around a decade? We have enough karts to do it, we just need driver’s butts in kart seats!  Read more about this race here.

2013:

10/13/2013 – The 18th Annual Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Klassic 200 won by Kelly Miller in the Galletta’s Greenhouse #7!!!

SATURDAY,OCTOBER 12th, 2013, OSWEGO, NY –  OUTTA’ NOWHERE!

Brian time trialed front row of the starting lineup for the 18th Annual Galletta’s Klassic 200!

The 5th member of the Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Klassic Championship fraternity is crowned! The longest-running Oswego Karting championship ran it’s 18th annual marathon event, which decides both the point standings (best overall karter in the area), and also the best Iron-Man karter in the area. Eleven drivers entered but only three led all night (11 drivers?! That leaves several karts on site – including the timed fastest kart of the fleet – Galletta’s #5 – unused?! For shame!!! And this is supposed to be a racing town?!)

The three you see, Kelly Miller, Matt Stevens, and Chris Stevens had a duel of the ages, as they essentially battled back and forth for the lead for all 200 laps, with occasional challenges by Brian Galletta and Eric Woolworth. READ MORE HERE!

9/8/2013 – Brian Galletta and Ryan Palmer win The Track is Loose as Heck Twin-30s!

 photo 20130909-twin-30s-winners-b_zps6f71188b.jpg

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8th, 2013, OSWEGO, NY –  The 1st feature went to Brian Galletta (in his Platt-num #28) after a crazy 1st 30-laps with crashing and all kinds of dry/dusty tack and smashing, crashing hijinks and then surviving challenges by Chris and Matt Stevens. For the 2nd feature, yet another rookie driver steps into the storied 18-year Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Speedway winner’s circle, 1st year driver Ryan Palmer wins his 1st career feature with a 30-lap sweep in the Brian Galletta (formerly Eric Woolworth) #88, recovering from a flip, almost getting disqualified in the 1st feature from crashing into everybody, and some crazy crashes in the 1st feature and barely holding off some half-hearted challenges from Matt and Chris Stevens. Next week we will again look at Saturday, but probably run Sunday, and we are still looking at probable dates for our 18th Annual Klassic (200-Lapper), with 9/28, 10/5 and 10/6 as possible dates. More on the race is on the race rundown page right here…

6/19/2013: Dave Spanfelner and Brian Galletta take the Mid-Week Twin Features!

Oswego Karting 6/19/2013: Dave Spanfelner and Brian Galletta take the Mid-Week Twin Features!

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19TH, 2013 – Sunday, June 16th saw a muddy track prevent the 2nd of 3 regularly-scheduled Sunday races for the 2013 season. So for the 2nd time in this young season, we ran a mid-week special rain-date event! Dave Spanfelner won the 1st Twin-30 in his DS Humphrey’s #54. Then Brian Galletta stormed by his brother Kevin to take the 2nd feature, which was shortened to 24 laps  by starter Wesley TrOgre Stevens due to dark (despite Chris and Matt’s protest to finish the last 6). These two also won the last Twin-30s, the DS Humphrey’s 2012 Fall Finale! (Behold! Buddy the Galletta’s Greenhouse patrol cat got in the pic, too! Ogie’s gotta’ be gettin’ jealous.) Sorry we were behind due to the shortened race week, but rest assured… more pictures and points are here!

2012:

2012 was clearly Brian’s most successful season racing to date with multiple feature wins, his 1st ever pole on in the Klassic 200 with his brand-new Galletta #13 (which was later sold twice and adapted to the Galletta’s #43).

10/6/2012 – Brian Galletta Wins the Pole via the Fastest Time Trial to the 17th Annual Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Klassic 200!

posing before the 17th Annual Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Klassic 200 on 10/6/2012. Brian, with the assistance of Matt Stevens, Wes Stevens and Randy Platt, built the #13 from scratch for roughly a grand in 2012, the most expensive Galletta’s Kart to date. Though it initially timed very fast, netting Brian a pole position start, it didn’t fare any better or worse than any other Galletta’s kart in the fleet.

...Brian took the lead with his brand-new (chassis and motor alike) Brian Galletta Racing #13, built for all month prior and finished the day of the race (with help from Matt Stevens, Wes Stevens and Randy Platt).

On 10/6/2012, at the 17th Annual Galletta’s Greenhouse Klassic Championship 200-Lap Race, Brian Galletta time trialed the coveted pole position and led the first portion of the race going away in his brand-new Bran Galletta “Doggy Style” #13 kart – just finished the day of the race!

7/15/2012 – Brian Galletta Returns to Win 1st Feature in 8 Years!

SUNDAY, JULY 15th, 2012: Brian Galletta – one of the original members of the Galletta’s Karting Club – got his first feature win in eight years by winning the 2nd 30-Lapper in his Plattitude #287 (chassis built by Randy Platt, motor by Matt Stevens). And even though Dave Spanfelner, Matt Stevens, and Chris Stevens all almost took the win in the first feature, it was Melissa Stevens who evaded several spinning and wrecking karts to take it in her Scissor’s-n-Fur #19. The story is here….

Ogie Stevens & Brian Galletta tell Randy Platt to f-off!

After his win, Brian (and Ogie) taunt good buddy Randy Platt who was one of his self-imposed sabbaticals from racing. Get back here and race, Boban!

Brain flips his cousin Matt off for stealing his win with a few laps to go!

SATURDAY, JUNE 23rd, 2012: Brian Galletta deserved to win this one. He has raced for years – being one of the original members of the club that his cousins founded – with only one regular feature win to his credit (that happened so long ago–2004–most of us forgot about it, including himself, and a second “All-Galletta” race where it was technically a rookie race where he was the only experience driver on the track at the time). He had been fast in prior Klassics. And tonight, he led fifty four of the first fifty-six laps – most being hounded by his cousins Chris and Matt – and at times pulled away from the pack, before he started slowing down and… oops, Matt did it again. Here is the tale…

And if you wonder why Brian is flipping Matt off… it’s a long story of Matt being a victory hog. But it quite possibly began here.. as Matt was a BALL hog here, pushing poor Brian to the ground like a rag doll! Oh that ruthless bully Matt!!! :

(BTW, the cousins always got along 100% great, but I’ve noticed that if I do not expressly put that this is HUMOR and NOT serious, people will take it literally. No, Matt and Brian always got along, again… this is HUMOR. SMH…)

2011:

2011 saw a return to regular racing for Brian, as his arm recovered enough to handle full-time racing again. He purchased his good buddy Randy Platt’s #28 kart in mid-2011 and hasn’t missed a race since.

16th Annual Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Klassic 200 lineup on 10/8/2011.

2010:

Due to multiple surgeries on his arms for dialysis, he could not race full-time as he wished to. But he has raced when he could, including regularly between 1990s-2004, but only occasionally from 2005-2010.

2009:

 Photobucket
Brian posing with the Galletta’s #5 at the 8/23/2009 All-Galletta Race! He drove the #4 and #5 in 2009.

Brian Galletta –  the only competitor who has had any substantial prior experience – drew the pole for the FIRST EVER ALL-GALLETTA race – which featured all cousins of Galletta’s Karting founders Chris and Matt Stevens, and also all grandsons (and one great-grandson) of Galletta’s Greenhouse founder John J. Galletta. The draw made it very easy for him to use his knowledge of the karts and track (including a feature win, some heat wins, time-trialing 2nd fastest and and leading a large chunk of the 2003 Klassic) and dominate all 30 laps unchallenged for the win, his 2nd career feature win at Galletta’s.

2005-08:

Brian missed the entire crazy saga of the OHV Outlaws and the Oswego Speedway’s Dirt Kartway drama during his hiatus from racing. He would’ve LOVED to be here for that craziness.

2004:

Won a feature in 2004 before dialysis surgeries to his arm took him out of regular competition for four years. From early 2004-mid 2009, Brian didn’t race at all, although he came out to see a race from time to time.

2003:

The 1st of 100-laps for the 8th annual 2003 Galletta's Go-Kart Klassic!Brian Galletta dominating the early portion of the '03 Galletta's Klassic
(Above) Time Trialed 2nd fastest time at the 2003 Galletta’s Klassic 100, and led a large portion of the race before his kart fell apart from under him (Our Karting Klassic is a marathon, and patience is key).

Karts Raced:
Raced several Galletta’s Greenhouse karts over the years, including the #1, 6, and 7. The steering wheel on the #1 is permanently damaged and a small fence in front of the camera tower is forever warped due to some rather humorous accidents back in the day thanks to Brian.

1990s-2001:

Year Started Racing at Galletta’s: Brian was one of the original Galletta’s Karters, starting in the early-to-mid 1990s when it was just his cousins Chris & Matt and uncle Wes out there and we were all just yard karts with box stock 5hp flatheads, small yard kart tires, no stagger and small, easily-breakable chains (since then, we’ve come along way as Brian had noted after a few years away from our sport – the only thing separating us from WKA-type karting is the money and BS involved). Therefore, his points during these early years went unrecorded in our modern 2000-and-up stats.

2000 Galletta's Klassic (Look at how narrow the track was back then!)
Brian Galletta (nicknamed “Bowser” after the Super Mario Kart character due to his look in the kart) raced on and off from the 1990s through the early 2000s. Brian raced 5 events in 2000. Here he is rounding out the field in the then 80-Lap Klassic, held on September 30th, 2000.

Brian was also part of the Syrell Supermodified racing team, and 3/5ths of the team (including Brian, far right), raced in our 2001 Klassic race.

3/5ths of the Syrell Team was 3/6ths of our Galletta's Klassic in 2001!
