7/7/2013: Chris Stevens wins 3rd Straight Feature at 18th Annual Independence Day 45!
SUNDAY, JULY 7th, 2013, OSWEGO, NY – Chris Stevens took the Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com/R&C Sushi #4 into victory lane with a strong performance for his 4th feature win of 2013 (including 3rd in a row!). The Independence Day 45-Lapper, our 18th annual race to celebrate America’s birthday, was filled with close and competitive racing from start to finish, and the Blu-Ray/DVD shows just what we are talking about when we say we are the largest, most experienced, most competitive karting class in the area, bar none. Not to mention by FAR the most affordable. Initial leader Joe Sereno was holding strong – as Chris, Matt Stevens and Brian Galletta all passed each other back and forth behind him – until his drive tire started going down and then blew shortly after the #4 passed him for the lead. Then another battle occurred as the leaders came up on traffic between Chris, Brian, and Matt… a tremendous contest from start to finish. (And Buddy the Galletta’s Greenhouse Patrol cat photo-bombed victory lane… AGAIN!) More below!!!!

He is credited with makeup points for this, and is counted as a DNS. He earned makeup points 11th in both of the 6/19/2013 Twin-30s.

In the early going we can see that the low groove was open for business today. Here Chris Stevens takes the Galletta’s Greenhouse/Crusher.com/R&C Sushi #4 down low (not ON the down low, son… that’s what the so called “karters” who don’t come out to race with us do), while Eric Woolworth (Raven Tavern #78), Dave Spanfelner (DS Humphrey’s #54), Brian Galletta (Brian Galletta Motorsports #28), and Matt Stevens (in the Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #74).
Any karter in the area with balls races at Galletta’s. Racing at its purest form, the Rucker Park of karting. Most simply do not have what it takes.
A good chunk of the race it was a back-and-forth battle between the top three in points, brothers Chris and Matt Stevens and cousin Brian Galletta.
Joe fighting to get under Matott as Dave tries to get by his brother Eric on lap 1.
In the early going, Joseph Sereno blasted into the lead (in the Galletta’s Greenhouse #5) with his new motor aboard. But look at that pesky lil’ powerhouse Matt Stevens (in the Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #74) sneaking in there, in the grass to attempt a pass! Matt was in 2nd pressuring Joe before he had to pit with a flailing loose nerf bar, which he quickly pitted to tear off and resume.
After that, a display of both excellent, top-notch back-and-forth racing and unexpected, nonsensical comedy occured between leaders Joe Sereno, Chris Stevens and Brian Galletta…
With Joe leading, Brian used a banzai pass on Chris in turn 1. When he did this, he inexplicably flipped Joe off, while Chris slingshotted back by him to regain 2nd place. Then, Chris tried getting under Joe, Joe got out of shape and the #4 tapped the #5. The #5 badly slowed, and it appears that it had a softening left-rear tire, which went completely flat and got both Chris and Brian by. But not before Brian smashed Joe for good measure on the pass. Brian has been on a rampage of late (and it makes for some great video)!
Skulduggery has been suspected, and there is some compelling evidence here as it appears as if Dave and Matt had a transaction when he waived Matt by during the race and were seen exchanging money after the race. Hmmm…. but why would Matt need any help, as since the 2000 season at Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Speedway (2000-’12) and Oswego Speedway’s Dirt Kartway (2006-’08), he has won a combined 129 features, 16 track championships, and since 1995, has won 12 Annual Classic Championships combined on the two tracks, and is a close 2nd in points and wins thus far this season as well! 😉 😀
The race went on with Brian staying with Chris, and Matt catching them both (after Dave waived him by).
When Brian tried trapping Chris and passing him on Spanfelner, Matt got by the #28. Then, when Chris tried to get by Dave, Matt tried trapping the #4 on the #81 as well!
Much like last year’s Klassic 200, Dave is always a beast to pass, even if it is fighting from going a lap down. Brian, Matt and Chris battled for the lead while trying to get by Dave, and it made for a handful of truly epic laps!
Most exciting is Matt’s helmet cam, which shows the battle from the Matt-person perspective. You won’t find tighter open wheel karting around. These guys are pros, and they feel that cookie-cutter bodies that most other classes use only make for clumsier, sloppier racing. Open wheel forces respectful and clean driving.
[NOTE: As you can see, Dave is trying out a Box Stock Blue Clone on his backup DS Humphreys #81. Box stock won’t cut it as Dave was powerful enough in the turns but lacked top speed in the straights, so it appears that it’d need race enhancements to be on equal footing. We’re still looking at experimenting for a heavier driver to try with… IF they wanted to put money into some racing enhancements. Dave’s fathead on his starter art – the DS Humphreys #54 – is a beast.]
However, the tremendous 3-kart battle was cut short with Chris and Matt side-by-side when Brian Galletta’s front bumper locked with Matt’s back bumper, and they both hit the loose patch and went off of turn 4. That ended the best race in recent memory, with Chris surviving, and Dave going from 4th to 2nd, and Brian then developing more mechanical problems and dropping off with a few laps to go. However, on the restart, Dave let Matt by to go after Chris, but again Chris held off his masterful brother for the feature win, his 4th of 2013 and his 3rd in 7 days!
Video clip of the last lap and a half of the final battle, compressed down from our HD videos (from camera angle by Melissa Stevens) USED to be available via Photobucket. Not anymore. Scroll up and watch it at the top of page on YouTube, or stare at a bnal spot via Photobucket. (More below point standings below),

More Evidence: PHOTOBUCKET SUCKS DIARRHEA ASS
Once upon a time, this ONCE was a “Video clip of the last lap and a half of the final battle, compressed down from our HD videos (from camera angle by Melissa Stevens)” to show off our standard DVDs, and HD-quality AVCHDs, and/or Blu-ray library that are available for sale, AND, later on, uploaded to YouTube. But Photobucket are extortionists. How can YouTube host videos without charge (paid for by ads) and Photobucket can’t even host pictures? Instead we have this:
…and this:
See anything? No? How about this?
Yeah, no. Gone.
Well, just scroll to the top of the page to see the video instead. Becaaaaaauuse …. PHOT-OBUCKET-SUCKS! PHOT-OBUCKET-SUCKS! PHOT-OBUCKET-SUCKS! PHOT-OBUCKET-SUCKS!
On to next week!!
