7/14/2013: Matt Stevens Breaks Bro’s Streak in 45-Lap Feature Triumph
SUNDAY, JULY 14th, 2013, OSWEGO, NY – Matt Stevens (in the Galletta’s Greenhouse #3) snapped his brother’s 3-feature win streak by passing polesitter and early-leader Adam Lytle (Lytle #33c) on a lap-16 restart and led the rest of the way. Matt wins his 3rd feature of 2013 with the triumph, coming back from a lap 0 warning where flagger Wesley “Ogre” Stevens claimed Matt jumped the gun (he did go from 5th to tied for 1st at the start before Wes threw the yellow for the warning). Meanwhile, his brother Chris trapped Lytle in traffic for 2nd and was hoping for 10 more laps and a little more traffic so he could challenge. Honorable mention goes to Adam Lytle, who is continuing to show improvement with his fresher motor prepped by Matt a few weeks back and if not for a slow restart and lapped traffic, may have had his 1st career win. The hot temperatures kept some from making the race – and we almost had to postpone, but some late arriving rookies made for 10 competitors in the show, which qualified for our self-imposed minimum driver requirement at 8. However, missing was Brian Galletta, who took some damage in the points race after being in the top-3 all season until now. (And Buddy the Galletta’s Greenhouse Patrol cat photo-bombed victory lane… AGAIN!) More below!

Commentators Chris Stevens and Uncle Ogie Stevens bring you the unfathomably talented and exciting racing action weekly in our Galletta’s Karting Club DVDs ($5), AVCHDs ($8) or Blu-rays ($12). Cameras by Rungnapha “Aou” Stevens and Melissa Stevens.
MAKEUP/RETCON HEAT

Drivers who miss at least one race are given the opportunity to make-up missed events by racing in “retcon” heat races that count them in the back of the pack of the earliest race they missed. It also serves a dual purpose to get 1st-timer rookies accustomed to the track and karts, and they used to simply be known as rookie races. Dave Spanfelner and Eric Woolworth also ran in the race, but since they have not missed one yet, they will be banked points if they miss a race this season. If they don’t miss one race, it won’t count.
Finish:
1st. Adam Lytle (Lytle Racing #33c) – Earned 9th in 7/7/2013’s 45-Lap Feature
2nd. Branden “Toomer” Matott (Raven Tavern #78) – Earned 12th place in both 6/19/2013’s Twin 30-Lap Features
3rd. David Hamilton (Galletta’s Greenhouse #1) – Earned 17th place in 6/5/2013’s 45-Lap Feature
4th. Alex Emond (Galletta’s Greenhouse #6) – Earned 18th place in 6/5/2013’s 45-Lap Feature
45-LAP FEATURE EVENT

The start of the feature saw naughty Matty-Joey try to jump the whole field the second the green flag dropped! Bad boy… haven’t you won enough passing fair and square?! You would think winning more races than all other Oswego Karters in the history of Oswego karting (yes, that includes the pay tracks, not just our track) would be enough! Sheesh, Matt!
Start:
1st. Adam Lytle (Lytle Racing #33c)
2nd. Branden “Tumor” Matott (Raven Tavern #78)
3rd. Eric Woolworth (Raven Tavern #88)
4th. Dave Spanfelner (DS Humphrey’s #81)
5th. Matt Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse #3)
6th. Chris “Chrusher” Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse #0)
7th. David Hamilton (Galletta’s Greenhouse #1)
8th. Alex Emond (Galletta’s Greenhouse #6)
9th. Melissa Stevens – w/Lilybeth Stevens (Scissors ‘n Fur #19)

Matt still tried getting under everybody, but at least it was a better start and he didn’t take the lead on lap 1 from 5th.
Remember, on starts and restarts (1) leader sets the pace (and start speeding up between 3 and 4) but should not go full speed until hitting the pylon in turn 4, and (2) no karts may get out of line nor make a pass attempt until the leader passes the pylon in 4. ALso, karts should stay LESS THAN one kart length behind the kart in front of them, preferably half or less, as long as you aren’t riding the bumper. Any more or less and the starter can throw the caution and restart it with 1 warning. A 2nd time and the offender(s) will be placed in last. ANy restarts that do not seem smooth, the starter can halt it and we’ll try again. Smooth and fair is the key.

Lytle had the #33c moving pretty good all race. In the early going, he held off challenges from Eric Woolworth and Matt Stevens.

On lap 16, Woolworth spun out attempting a pass on Lytle. The restart proved to be the opening that Matt Stevens needed, as he powered by the #33c slingshotting out of turn 4 as soon as the green flag dropped.

Lytle was still proving quite fast, holding off the Galletta’s #0 driven by Chris Stevens for many laps, until lap 34, where Chris trapped Adam on a lapped kart. Chris felt like he needed 10 more laps and a few more lapped karts to give Matt a run for the win. Meanwhile, Chris has been enjoying the speed and handling in the #0, and is amazed by the amount of cowardly wannabe racers/karters in Oswego County that could race a kart like this but totally wuss out. If you are reading this and don’t race with us, this means YOU. Puss.

Handicap Starting Order for the next race:
At Galletta’s, our handicap formula for all regular-season point races (minus Klassic [time trials] and the 2nd of a twin feature [invert finish of 1st except prior winners]) is to invert the field by (1) current season wins, (2) past season wins, and finally current season points-per-feature. It helps experienced drivers who have not yet won a feature (recently or in prior years) nor finished well in weekly races by inverting first wins and then points-per-race.
