2nd 30-LAP FEATURE EVENT:
Tim Galletta emerged as the winner of the 2nd 30-lapper — his 3rd career win at the track built by his cousins and named after his grandfather. However, the race commanders were again the son-and-father team of Shadoe and George Russell, as they were 1-and-2 for 23 of the 1st 24 laps until George got sideways momentarily in turn-4, which then made 3rd-place Chris Stevens accidentally help him over, with 4th-place Matt Stevens right there to be collected. When George, Chris and Matt went to the rear, it set up a chaotic finish, where Shadoe initially started too fast in the caution lap, and when he slowed down, Tim Galletta pulled alongside Doe, brushing tires in the front stretch, and finally ending with Doe spinning in the drying, yet still slightly slick 2nd turn.
In hindsight, race starter Wesley “Ogre” Stevens should have thrown the yellow for a terrible start, but since he did not, Shadoe unfortunately lost out after leading so many laps in the last two weekend of racing. The correct start is (1) all must stay in line, (2) leader sets the pace, but not go full speed until (3) his bumper crosses that line in 4. And finally, (4) once the leader’s front bumper crosses that line, anybody can attempt a pass.
Doe is likely due to get his win soon enough though, as he is the only regular driver who has not yet won a feature this season, and thus will be handicapped up front again due to our points system. Passing opportunities were limited due to the lower grove being a bit slick, which made for a poor night of racing for the usual master-of-the-low-groove Matt Stevens, and enabled Chris to score enough points to take a narrow lead in the point standings. The chase is looking good as we get closer and closer to the 15th Annual Galletta’s Karting Klassic 200 – the traditional points finale for the largest and longest-running weekly dirt karting series in Oswego, NY.
