6/23/2013: Matt Stevens Sweeps the Twin-35s in his Galletta’s Greenhouse #3 & 33!
SUNDAY, JUNE 23rd, 2013 – Matt Stevens is like a high-scoring MVP in a sport. You can contain him, slow him down for a bit, even think you got him figured out. Then he explodes. Matt took over the lead from his handicap starting position of 2nd place in the 1st feature and led most of the race to win it with relative ease, although Brian Galletta kept things interesting. But in the 2nd feature, he did another one of his steal jobs – he really didn’t deserve it running 4th and 3rd pretty much the whole way until the end. Chris Stevens, Dave Spanfelner, and Billy Truax all had serious shots at the win but all made mistakes that Matt capitalized upon, taking Truax by a bumper at the checker. The kid just cannot be stopped, and no driver at the local pay karting tracks is in his league in terms of experience, motor building, and sheer volume of wins and championships. His record speaks for itself, ignored or not by less talented/less experienced pay karting snobs. (BTW, he swept three years of titles when he raced at the local pay track too – back when the other classes weren’t even counting their points and keeping track of their wins.) Other than the make-up race, we scheduled no heats and opted to go for twin-35s. That’s 70 laps of racing going between 35-50mph at around 15-16 seconds a lap. That’s a lot more than 5 minutes of feature racing.
35-LAP FEATURE #1
Matt Stevens didn’t win yet in 2013, and our handicap system – which is usually rock solid in organizing highly competitive and fair starts – failed us all this time. Its not foolproof, and Matt started 2nd, which basically means that unless the leader holds him off long enough, we’re all racing for 2nd.

Matt-cam!!! Matt Stevens’ HD helmet cam keeps picking up some awesome footage for our DVDs/Blu-rays. Here he works on Billy Truax in the Ruggio Racing #02 (which he rented to test it out and is trying to negotiate a buy after Billy Ruggio can’t find the time to run and will listen to potential buyers) and Brian Galletta who got an AMAZING start going 6th-to-2nd testing them both down low. And not on the down low.
Matt, who has amazing control of the karts that he drives, executed a move for the lead that nobody else can pull off.
Damn, that tricky Matty-Joey! And Brian jumping from 6th to 3rd on lap 1?! WTH?!

35-Lap Feature #2:
2nd feature started with an inverted field from the finish of the 1st. What the starting lineup shows is every regular driver has accomplished 1 feature victory. We know some in the past have accused Matt of giving his own kart more power than the others. Nothing could be further from the truth, and our points and wins list shows that anybody who sticks with it competes, wins, compiles an excellent points-per-race, and win percentages. Not to mention how Chris and Matt will periodically hop into a somewhat ignored or ridiculed Galletta’s kart and not miss a beat. This race, Chris hopped into the #0, a fast kart that often does get ignored.

Billy Truax, Chris Stevens and Dave Spanfelner battled it out in the top-3 for the majority of the race. Spanfelner took the lead early on but hit a loose patch that enabled Billy and Chris to get by him. The Chris drifted a bit too high in turn 3 and enabled Dave and Matt to get by him. When Dave went for the lead, Matt then made his move and passed the #54 with a few laps to go.
Oh that tricky Matt! His patented slingshot out of turn 4 was in full effect tonight! He pulled alongside Truax on the white flag lap, and by all appearances they either tied, or Billy got him by a sliver. Then, lap-35 came and Matt executed the move to perfection. To mostly everyone, it looked like a tie. But the cameras, Billy himself and Eric Woolworth (who’s kart was O.F.T.N.) said Matt got him by the slightest of margins. Pesky Matt does it again!
