9/11/2015 – Rookie Tony Cimilluca wins 15-kart/45-lap Feature in only his 2nd race!
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th, 2015, OSWEGO, NY – FIFTEEN karts took the track on the 9/11 Anniversary race, and a rookie in his second ever race took the checker! Tony Cimilluca started 4th, took the lead early on passing three other rookies and held off challenges from veterans Matt Stevens, Adam Lytle and Chris Stevens (Multi-time winners and top-3 in points) for an improbable feature win! Considering the fact that a great many drivers race for a year (or even years) before they are able to find that first checkered flag, impressive to say the least! More details below!
Next weekend is a bye week and Saturday, September 26th at noon is the biggest annual race in Oswego County bar none – our 20th Annual Galletta’s Greenhouse Go-Kart Klassic 200! More details forthcoming. Again… sorry, work, a 1-year-old and last weekend’s holiday festivities have put me behind on the website, but I’ll get back on the ball these two weeks leading up to the Klassic 200, as will Matt with the karts and track! – Chris

45-LAP FEATURE:
As stared earlier, 1st-timer rookies have finally been discovering what we do here at Galletta’s every Summer weekend since the 1990s – have big time fun racing on a small-time budget. This weekend in particular, the rookies guaranteed a race, as several veterans were unable to make it due to personal, home-related reasons, as we only had 4 veterans and 9 rookies (and we need a BARE minimum of 6 to start in able for us to count for a regular points race)! Wow. The starting grid was as follows:
45-LAP PRE-KLASSIC TUNE-UP RACE START:
1. Rodney Buskey (Buskey Racing #X00)
2. George Johnson (Galletta’s Greenhouse #9)
3. Jon Johnson (Galletta’s Greenhouse #5)
4. Tony Cimilluca (Galletta’s Greenhouse #7)
5. Adam Lytle (Lytle #33c)
6. Matt Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #74)
7. Chris Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #4)
8. Billy Ruggio (Ruggio Racing #02)
9. David Hall (Galletta’s Greenhouse #1)
10. Corey Goodsell (Galletta’s Greenhouse #78)
11. Jason King (Galletta’s Greenhouse #6)
12. Robert Wells (Galletta’s Greenhouse #2)
13. David Hall Jr. (Galletta’s Greenhouse #0)
14. Melissa Stevens (Scissors n’ Fur #19)
Rodney Buskey was the early leader in the long-lost former Russ Hockey #00, which has been rebuilt into the #00X. But mechanical issues dropped it out early. George Johnson in the Galletta’s #9 maintained the lead for a lap until several competitors shot by him at once. This put Jon Johnson in the lead in the #5 foor the next nine laps until he lost control in turn 1 and brought out the caution.
This put fellow rookie Tony Cimilluca in the lead. With the top-3 in points behind him. With around 30 laps to go.
Matt almost got Tony Cimilluca in traffic, but the rookie used the power of the Galletta’s Greenhouse #7 well and he held on. Chris also almost got Adam, but the kill switch knocked off the #4 to the back and he had to work his way back up through a field of rookies.
This was essentially the battle for 3/4ths of the race – rookie Tony Cimilluca holding off 2nd, 3rd, and 1st in points, Matt Stevens, Adam Lytle, and Chris Stevens respectively! And if it wasn’t for Tony putting his hand up and slamming on the brake while crossing the finish line on the 2nd-to-last-lap, Adam Lytle likely would’ve held on for 3rd… the #33c stalled due to the top 3 checking up. Tony was able to hold on to do something that has only been seen a rare few times – a driver winning a feature event in only his 2nd race at the track (I’d have to look it up, but I believe that Ed Maynes, Kyle Reuter and Jared Halstead were a few)! With all of these rookies, the 20th Annual Galletta’s Karting Klassic could be our biggest in it’s 20 year history! Awesome! Unfortunately, Tony cannot be in it because he will be out of town for work, but he plans to be out all next season!
45-LAP PRE-KLASSIC TUNE-UP RACE FINISH:
1. Tony Cimilluca (Galletta’s Greenhouse #7)
2. Matt Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #74)
3. Chris Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #4)
4. Jon Johnson (Galletta’s Greenhouse #5)
5. Adam Lytle (Lytle #33c) ***
6. Robert Wells (Galletta’s Greenhouse #2)
7. DNF – David Hall Jr. (Galletta’s Greenhouse #0)
8. DNF – David Hall Sr. (Galletta’s Greenhouse #1)
9. DNF – George Johnson (Galletta’s Greenhouse #9)
10. DNF – Jason King (Galletta’s Greenhouse #6)
11. DNF – Billy Ruggio (Ruggio Racing #02)
12. DNF – Rodney Buskey (Buskey Racing #X00)
13. DNF – Corey Goodsell (Galletta’s Greenhouse #78)
14. DNF – Melissa Stevens (Scissors n’ Fur #19)
Key:
DNF = Did not Finish
*** = Stalled on last lap in 3rd when leader slammed on brakes and 2nd place checked up. Despite finishing 5th on track, he will be credited with 3rd place points due to the unfortunate incident that was not his fault at all, and he actually stalled to avoid. 1st place must not slam on brakes during caution unless there is immediate reason to, and in hindsight, perhaps the leader should have gone to the rear due to bringing out a caution, but we let it slide.
