2005 Season
THE 2005 GALLETTA’S GREENHOUSE GO-KARTING SEASON VIDEO PLAYLIST:
The 2005 Season had us start recording every race from about the midway point, and now all we have are uploaded to YouTube. Unfortunately, one of the races with a horrible crash (involving Mark Miller and Mike Billion) was borrowed and never returned by Mark Miller.
THE 2005 SEASON FOR THE GALLETTA’S DIRT GO-KARTING CLUB:
A few shots from the start and finish of the 10th Annual Galletta’s Kart Klassic
The 2005 Season was our biggest yet with a staggering 50 drivers running in 28 feature events won by 10 different drivers (Matt, Chris and Wes Stevens, Gary Miller Sr., Mark Miller, Mike Billion, Ed Maynes, Jason Mills, Neil Gosch, and Barrelin’ Brian Bortel). Although it started on a down-note, as in the offseason as Dan Murdock — an impressive rookie from 2004 — was killed in a tragic automobile accident during the winter. We were looking forward with racing with him for years, as he was a good racer and even more he was genuinely great kid, and completely senseless to lose his life so young. We dedicated the 2005 Klassic in his honor, as the 2004 Klassic was his last race.
This year became the very 1st one where we covered every single race on our brand new website, and around mid-season we video recorded every single race and made DVD-R copies available to anybody who asks (years later, we also uploaded EVERY SINGLE RACE to YouTube for anybody around the world with internet to view). Impressive ’04 rookies such as Ed Maynes and Mark Miller returned, although Miller brought a group of drivers (such as Mike Billion, Neil Gosch and Eric Raponi who all had extreme speed and power out of the box with little to no track time) with stock 6.5hp OHV motors into weekly races, and while we loved racing them, the very clear motor power discrepancy led to many drivers in smaller, stock 5.0hp flathead motors getting angry and feeling disrespected. As the season progressed, box stock motor rules were loosened and shaved heads were allowed on the flatheads to even up the power. While it happened, it was short-lived, as the OHV clan also started altering their motors and speeding up more, which further upset the 5hp drivers more. In the end, only Matt Stevens could compete with the OHV group, as they were dominating everyone else and the controversy led to the OHV group taking themselves out of competition entirely a couple weeks before Klassic (which saddened us greatly because we missed their passion and competition), but we simply wanted everyone to run the same motor to keep things fair and equal, not have an open class which would make the prices go up, drivers chasing new motors, speeds inconsistent and potentially unsafe. Shortly after this, one of the drivers/friends in this OHV “Outlaw” group became deeply involved in building a dirt track in back of the Oswego Speedway and swore he’d get back at us for allegedly kicking his friends out (which, we never did, we just asked for same engines and they left on their own accord).
Unfortunately, the 6.5hp OHV vs. 5.0hp Flathead engine controversy took away from what was an extremely competitive and intense racing season. With 10 winners (although 3 of whom used the 6.5hp OHV motors to get their wins–much to the chagrin of everyone in a 5hp flathead), the racing was really good, and newbies like Gary Miller Jr., Kelly Miller, Brian Bortel, Eddie Scruton, Fred Collins, Rob Jimenez and Josh Schute amongst others added some more talent to our weekly racing poo, and Rob’s mom Kristina Pitsley and stepdad Ken Pitsley helped immeasurably with the officiating, track work and kart work (if only we could keep Kristina from fighting with people and we could really have a smooth show!). Matt Stevens, however, beat everybody no matter what motor they had, and won 12 feature events and the Klassic 125 en route to yet another clean sweep of the track points title and Klassic Championships.
