8/22/2011 – Randy Platt & Tim Galletta Take The Monday Night Return of Randy Twin-30s! (+YouTube)
MONDAY, AUGUST 22nd, 2011: With the regularly scheduled Sunday the 21st getting a washout, our race was moved to Monday the 22nd. Randy “The Bobandi” Platt made his triumphant return from his self-imposed half-summer hiatus to promptly win his first race back relatively unchallenged, taking his first feature win of 2011. The 2nd 30-Lapper saw Chris Stevens lead the first 27 laps only to break a throttle cable, and Tim Galletta took care of the final three en route to his 2nd win of 2011. The track was smooth and fast, and passes were at a premium. In a show of how fast and equal these karts are, the Galletta’s #2 has sat idle for most of the season without a pilot, until Randy took it to victory lane just like he did last year. It is no lie, but it seems as if some people don’t believe it when we say we have 14 race-ready/feature-winning/arrive-and-drive karts on site, many of which are free to drive, open to anybody who donates for gas/parts, and a good, experienced driver can win in each and any one of them on any given race. And, we can help you build your own potent/feature-winning kart as well for bottom dollar. It is proven and proven again and again, yet some weeks we don’t have driver butts in the kart seats. Fortunately, this week was not amongst them, as we had 8 karts on the track… but do the math – that means there were several still sitting idle. Get out and race, people! Our 200-Lapper is coming soon, and you want to be seasoned for that one! Anybody can win, but you have to work at learning the track and the karts to do so. Join us today! Videos coming when done and race results are up here! Now let’s review the race:

All picture captures & video clips are directly taken from our weekly DVDs, which are almost always available to buy the day after the race. It’s best to pre-order them so I can have them ready on race day for you.
Above is this race’s menu. For a DVD copy of this race, please e-mail or call Chris Stevens and ask for this week’s race. Each disc is chock full of between 1 to 3 hours of racing in the highest-possible DVD resolution with Dolby Stereo 2.0 Surround Sound, predominantly from multiple angles and are only $5 each (discounts available for multiple copies or regular kart Galletta-Kart renters). We accept PayPal or cash, and can either ship or arrange for pickup. We now have THREE angles to catch all the action, although one is stationary on the start-finish line for those close call photo finishes.

ROOKIE & RETCON (MAKE-UP POINT) RACE:
Yeah, so anybody reading our website for a while so knows that we have newbie rookie qualifiers and make-up races for people who have missed at least one race. They are counted in the earliest race they missed and scored as if they started the race but did not finish it. Obviously, the more people who do makeup races, the less points they are good for, meaning that they are best for people who miss one or two events (keeps them in the points race) but not that great for people who miss a bunch (for them it’s the real racing experience that counts more than the points). We do not do these because they help the people who make every race (which is usually just the founders most seasons), we do it for the people who simply cannot make every single one due to work/family/money/etc.. In the long run, it helps everybody.
Newbie Rookie Harold “Hal” Borland looked good leading the retcon point race (in the Galletta’s #6) with Randy Platt (#2) and Justin Galletta (#7) breathing down his neck. However, right after this, inexperience caught up with him and he had a wild flip from running so close to the edge and going over our 20 degree banked turn (see on video). Oh, and he was okay and LOVED it. But he showed potential, which we always like to see!

Now to the regular racing action, son…
30-LAP FEATURE #1:
8 kart show tonight! Not bad for a Monday raindate! And Bobandi’s finally back after taking a chunk of the season off due to personal reasons. Lo and behold, he’s point-handicapped on the pole!
|
With the rain-outs, our back-turn angle has been under-covered due to our usual cameraman Gene Galletta not attending any of the raindate races. Here a stationary shot still took a decent angle of the action.
The track was fast all night. Even Matt, who usually picks people off when the track is a bit sub-par, had difficulty getting a pass. Then again, the Matt-Stopper, Chris, was holding him off, which saved others from what he calls “the torture rack” of moves he throws at people. Chris has seen them all, and can take the challenges better than anybody, but with the races close and so thin competitor-wise, Matt has been getting by everyone by capitalizing on one slow kart or one bad bump.
On a mid-race restart, Justin Galletta took the #7 under Randy’s #2, but Boban-the-man held him off on the quicker angle of the outside lane.
When a 1st-time rookie is out there, it will always take time for them to get up to speed. In the meantime, until they learn the track and karts, new guys (and girls) do provide passing opportunities when they are lapped. Here Tim Galletta (#54), Chris Stevens (#4), and Matt Stevens (#33) each try to advance a position by trapping the other in traffic.
One such opportunity occured on the last lap of feature 1, when Matt almost snuck under the rookie Hal, but couldn’t find the room, sparing both Tim and Chris from potentially losing positions. The usual unstoppable karting terror known as Go-Kart Mozart Master Matt only wound up passing his wife Melissa in the first show, and Randy Platt took all 30 laps (and their bonus points) for the grand-slam win.

30-LAP FEATURE #2:
As most readers know, we handicap our races via inverting the wins and points. However, for the 2nd of a Twin-30, we don’t have time to tally the points between races, and we have traditionally invert the finish of the 1st. However, after the last Twin-30s when Matt finished last in the 1st and then utterly blew away the feature via starting on the pole, we went back to our system that we set up late last year, where we still invert, but more wins still must be handicapped in the back to prevent another case of someone with as many points and wins as Matt to start on the pole. This set up a very dynamic field, with one exception… now Chris – who although has won the last two track championships despite only winning 3 features in the last 3 years – starts up front!
|
Chris Stevens took the lead on the initial start and held the lead for the first twenty-six laps. Tim Galletta and Joe Sereno were able to stay close to the #4, but neither were able to mount a challenge.
However, with the 26th curcuit nearly complete, with Chris holding a steady lead, the throttle cable snapped on the Galletta’s #4, again preventing Chris from getting only his 4th win in the past calendar 3 years. He hopped into the #8 (again, a -5 point penalty is charged for any mid-race kart change).
Timmy Galletta finished the final four laps to take his 2nd feature of 2011. He was followed by his son Justin in the #7, who under the radar snuck in two impressive 2nd place finishes tonight!
|
Next race should be Sunday unless the weather prevents us. As usual, we may run a rain date on an early weekday if enough racers are available for it, including a majority of regular drivers (drivers racing in at least 75% of the races held this season).
