6/17/2012: 17th Annual Father’s Day 45
Posted on June 17th, 2012 by ChrusherComix Studios
SUNDAY, JUNE 17TH, 2012: That darn Matty-Joey. Matt may not have been the fastest kart on the track. Maybe not even the 2nd fastest. But he was the craftiest, and used his patented slingshot maneuvers to sneak by faster karts and win the 2nd half of the postponed 2012 Opener (that grew to 16 karts), and the 13-kart/45-lap Father’s Day 45. He’s still the most dominant force in Oswego County karting by far. Matt Stevens is the UNDISPUTED best karter in Oswego, and if you think differently, RACE HIM. But, by default, he proves it every weekend. He does here and also did at Oswego Kartway before they banned his greatness (I mean, he basically runs the whole division, gives other people faster karts and still whoops them), so to beat him, you gotta’ come try him here. But you won’t. Because you know the truth. Here is the story….

SEASON OPENING FEATURE 45 – PART 2 (6/17/2012):
|
The final 24 laps of the race resumed on 6/17/2012 as a prelude before the Father’s Day 45. Chris Stevens led for 13 laps and was taking it relatively easy until Matt Stevens caught him sleeping and passed Chris via a slingshot pass.
Chris then hounded Matt and bumped his little brother a handful of times, and even almost got him back on a restart – but Matt in the lead on this track is too tough to beat without traffic or a mechanical failure. He steals the win back from his brother, one that Chris nearly stole when Matt ran out of gas last weekend before postponement of the race! Tremendous race nonetheless!

2012 FATHER’S DAY 45 | 13-KARTS:
Due to getting in a 1st-Timer retcon rookie race and the final 24 laps of our opening 45 (that had a lot of cautions), and the fact that the karts were already warned up, we semi-inverted the field for the 2nd feature. Adam Lytle was the only newbie who was allowed to start up front because he got more laps in than the other rookies from the prior week.
|
The rookie Adam Lytle impressed early on, as he held a good groove (the hardest part for most rookies – once they get a feel for it and hit it consistently, that’s when they can race competitively with the vets) and stayed in the lead for the first fifteen laps, an impressive feat for a rookie in only his 2nd race.
The battle to the front usually determines the outcome. Whichever vet can get into the lead usually can hold on to it for a win. So here we see Tim Galletta (#54) holding off Chris Stevens (#4), Matt Stevens (#33) and Joe Sereno (#5). Timmy has been plagued by a sputtering carb and hasn’t been his usual tough self, and has only been a mid-pack runner the 1st two features.
Now, what did I say in the prior picture captions? Rookies can often compete once they find the handle on the kart they are driving and learn that fast outer groove, but ONE mistake is all it takes for a veteran to capitalize and go bye-bye. This was the case on lap 16, as Matt went from 4th to 1st between the 3rd and 4th turns by slingshotting by Chris, Justin, and Adam when Adam got a little too high in the loose upper burn of turn 4 (Chris actually passed Justin as well, but momentarily thought the caution came out for Adam’s slip off the track, and Justin got him back). That’s all Matt needed, taking the lead despite the fact that Justin and Chris appeared as fast or faster than him.
This was the battle for the rest of the way. Justin Galletta was working VERY hard to repeat as the Galletta’s Father’s Day Champion (as he won it last year). Justin continuously attacked with the Galletta’s Greenhouse #7 (powered by his dad’s backup motor) and put in an outstanding effort to take the lead from Matt, hounding him and showing him a wheel a handful of times. Chris as well was staying with them both. But just like last race… once Matt gets into the lead, he is almost impossible to defeat minus traffic or mechanical failure. And hold on he did, for the 1st clean sweep of two features in one night at Galletta’s Greenhouse Backyard Karting Club Speedway!
