9/8/2013 – Brian Galletta and Ryan Palmer win The Track is Loose as Heck Twin-30s!
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8th, 2013, OSWEGO, NY – The 1st feature went to Brian Galletta (in his Platt-num #28) after a crazy 1st 30-laps with crashing and all kinds of dry/dusty tack and smashing, crashing hijinks and then surviving challenges by Chris and Matt Stevens. For the 2nd feature, yet another rookie driver steps into the storied 18-year Galletta’s Greenhouse Karting Speedway winner’s circle, 1st year driver Ryan Palmer wins his 1st career feature with a 30-lap sweep in the Brian Galletta (formerly Eric Woolworth) #88, recovering from a flip and some crazy crashes in the 1st feature and holding off challenges from Matt and Chris Stevens. Next week we will again look at Saturday, but probably run Sunday, and we are still looking at probable dates for our 18th Annual Klassic (200-Lapper), with 9/28, 10/5 and 10/6 as possible dates. More on the race coming soon…
TWIN 30-LAP FEATURE #1
Some shots of the early going, Adam Lytle, Ryan Palmer and Kevin Galletta leading the way and some great battles behind them with the loose, under-watered track.
The founding bros. Matt and Chris battle with one of last week’s winners, Branden “Tumor” Matott.
Start:
1st. Adam Lytle (Lytle Racing #33c)
2nd. Ryan Palmer (Brian Galletta #88)
3rd. Kevin Galletta (Brian Galletta/Plattnum #13)
4th. Branden “Toomer” Matott (Inkings Tatoo/Woodchuck Saloon #345)
5th. Brian Galletta (Brian Galletta/Plattnum #28)
8th. Eric Woolworth (Truax #20) * = Elected to start last
6th. Matt Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse #1)
7th. Chris Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com/R&C Sushi #8)
9th. Melissa Stevens w/Lilybeth (Scissors n’ Fur #19) [Did Not Start]
Here you can see the sun blinding the drivers going into turn 2 from Matt Stevens’ helmet cam and behind his brother Chris Stevens.
Newbie Ryan Palmer got loose and spun intro the inside hub wall, and Brian Galletta was at the worst place at the wrong time and landed under the #88.
Second shot from Matt’s helmet-cam. The #88 has been in many races since 2008 (and with many owner/drivers – Larry Phillips, Kenny Lindsley III, Billy Ruggio, Eric Woolworth, and now Ryan Palmer), and this is the very 1st time it has been flipped!
Important note: For this race only, we allowed two competitors to work on their karts and maintain their positions. Brian Galletta (3rd at the time) had to fix his front end alignment due to the above incident, and a few laps later, Adam Lytle (leading at the time) had to adjust something as well. Due to Wesley “Ogre” Stevens under-watering the track, we allowed some fixes because the track was a bit rough on the karts. But let it be know, from here on out, we do not allow very much to happen on the track, but we’ll reiterate it. We allow yellow/red lap SAFETY concerns, such as tightening bolts (such as a clutch bolt, tire, steering wheel, etc), oiling your chain, cleaning your visor, or releasing tire pressure. For pretty much anything else, such as repairs, alignments, adding tire pressure, gassing up, fixing a mechanical problem… you’ll probably have to go to the rear of the field unless it’s approved by track officials and a majority of active, on-track drivers. This race, we made an exception because the track was off. But, again, the sun dried the track and one reason why we wait until close to sun-down is this reason: The track dries FAST when we haven’t had much rain and the sun is beating on it all day, all summer long. In fact, it can get even drier now with Matt and Melissa’s home cutting out a portion of the woods that blocked the sun from hitting turns 1 & 2 late in the day.
Lytle had complete control of most of the race until mechanical problems parked the #33c while leading late. Here he was followed by brothers Kevin and Brian Galletta.
Tremendous battle shots from this week’s YouTube Videos! (If we could complete more races before the sun goes down, more of our videos would come out this sweet!)
After Lytle broke down, Kevin Galletta slowed and broke, and a hard-charging Ryan Palmer spun out going for the lead (and received a warning from Matt about a few banzai/kamikaze passes on Chris and Kevin before he spun out), the three most experienced vets on the track were 1-2-3 going for the lead! Brian his cousins Chris (#8) and Matt (#3) battling a loose and apparently slowing #28 kart.
Yes, this often is how close the karts are. Matt Stevens puts a lot of time into all of these karts, and there is no mechanic or engine guy in Oswego – professional race car mechanic nor the average Joe mechanic – who could do what he does, especially at no cost. Now apparently, from time to time people misread my comments on this website and take it as a slam or a dig on people. It’s not. We are stating the facts – Matt Stevens sets up an entire fleet of karts, and not only does he help his competition to beat him, but actually loves it when someone is out there flying like a bat out of hell in karts he set up! And they all come back to him when they need a tune-up or a setup change, because if something is off, they’ll be in the back. Matt works on the karts, and they are up front. And… he does it for the love of it, and considering how little he asks for his work, yet how close all of these karts are and how much just raw experience counts when racing these things, it is a testament to Matt’s abilities.
Nice shots of the last lap! You’d be hard pressed to find closer racing anywhere.
What’s nicest? THREE CAMERA ANGLES of the close finish!!!
Matt had to pull out at the last second (inset). He had a good shot, but simply ran out of track and had to pull out of be involved in a 2-way and possibly a 3-way crash. Brian then beat Chris to the stripe by a bumper or so. We race clean at Galletta’s. In many other racing classes, where disrespect and cutthroat moves may be the difference between winning, losing and crashing, this type of finish may not always be possible. We respect each other, and open-wheeled means that you MUST race clean. Granted, this is two brothers and a cousin in this finish, but no matter who races on our track gets that same respect and clean racing.
This was just how close the finish was – in fact, closer, as Chris was side-by-side with Brian on the stripe, with Brian nipping it by a bumper or so. If the track was a little wider, we would’ve been three-wide, as Matt had to pull out at the last second to avoid being put off the track in the outside groove. Brian collected the win in the #28!
Finish:
1st. Brian Galletta (Brian Galletta/Plattnum #28)
2nd. Chris Stevens (Galletta’s Greenhouse/Chrusher.com/R&C Sushi #8)

The 2nd feature was not as contested as the 1st. Inverting the field, Pretty much most of the race was newbie polesitter Ryan Palmer did what Eric Woolworth was doing in the #88 of late…. being a rocket. Why Eric sold this kart and engine is a total mystery, as it has been clearly the fastest kart on the track for around a month or so now, and a newbie rookie is even blowing away the field in it!
Matt chased him down in the Galletta’s #6, and was challenging the #88…
… before Ryan got sideways in turn 2, and the #6 – being a bit loose – over-corrected and hit the inside turn. The rest of the show was rookie Ryan bringing the #88 to its very impressive 2nd win in a couple weeks, and in doing so, accomplished what only a select few rookies have done before him, winning a feature in one of his 1st handful of races. Congrats to the rookie! Matt however, did prove that the #6 is a very fast kart and can win a race… and the #6 is generally one of the most neglected/ignored Galletta karts. Anybody who thinks we rig it or that we are a beginner class for organized pay track racing isn’t really a driver in our class. We prove it every week. Our regulars are all damn good drivers who get better all of the time, Chris and Matt have a world of experience racing and always compete for wins, the racing is close, we always put on a good race, and a rookie winning in only his 2nd week of racing also proves that if you can drive and you actually show up to race, you can compete every week and pick up wins.
