7/1/2012: 17th Annual GKC Independence Day 45
Posted on July 2nd, 2012 by ChrusherComix Studios
SUNDAY, JULY 1st, 2012: WTH. I mean.. seriously. I mean, every week, we know what Matt’s going to try to do. And we can’t stop him. No matter what kart he drives, he is able to run a lower groove than his fellow competitors, stay out of entanglements, and pick up wins. For the 1st time ever in our club’s history, we have the same person win four straight to open the season, and it is the undisputedly winningest karter in the local area and likely points beyond – Matt Stevens (yes, people at the lil’ track out back downtown may think they’re the $#!t until they look at Matt’s track record and that he’s been winning kart races since before most of them were born, and before the track they race at even existed. They may even write us off as unsanctioned “yard karts” with weird rules on specs that don’t adhere to WKA/NKA guidelines. But just remember… real men don’t race in the missionary position… and the ones that do wuss out against Matt, so the locals who do not show up on raceday forfeit by default). If this were any other track, he’d be booed out of town. But, let’s step back a bit… it isn’t like he is utterly dominating anybody this season – although he has done that in past years. Rather, he is being challenged every race by people the same speed, and sometimes a little more. He just gets to the front being the crafty (and sometimes lucky) lil’ driver that he is and keeps taking that checker. How’d he do it this time? That’s what this website is for. Here is the story….

HEAT 1:
Again, heat races serve as warm-ups that count for bonus points, and have no effect on the starting lineup of the feature race. The handicap starting lineup of the feature is split into two and we race.
|
Brian Galletta looked like a man on a mission in heat 1 after he blew by three competitors and started pulling away in the lead, until Melissa Stevens caught him napping on a restart and passed him back for the win. Yes, Melissa, NOT Matt with a sneaky pass for a win!
|
HEAT 2:
|
Heat two saw Tim Galletta storm by David Spanfelner for the win. Adam Lytle could not make the race, as he was having problems with his throttle cable.

INDEPENDENCE DAY 2012’s 45-LAP FEATURE | 9-KARTS:
|
A few drivers couldn’t make it due to special occasions and prior plans, so only nine drivers tonight. Not bad, but we want more drivers on track for better racing, more competition, and a more entertaining video!
The early going saw a lot of side-by-side racing from front to back. And open wheel means you have to race clean – no overpriced missionary-position bumper karts here, kids.
“D.S. Humphreys” David Spanfelner held his own in the early going in the #7, but Timmy, Chris and Matt were flying!
Close racing, as always at Galletta’s, as we see Tim Galletta taking the low groove to pass Eric Woolworth on a restart, with his cousins Matt and Chris right behind him.
The trio of Tim Galletta (#54), Matt Stevens (#3), and Chris Stevens (#4) were the guys to beat tonight. Whomever got to the front first was likely going to win, and the race was close and intense. Who would do it?
This was the race to watch… rookie Billy Ruggio holding off Tim Galletta, Matt Stevens, and Chris Stevens for the lead.
The race was essentially decided when leader Billy Ruggio got out of shape coming out of turn four with Tim Galletta and Chris Stevens bumper to bumper behind him. Matt did his lethal slingshot maneuver which put him in the lead. Again. But this time… on only lap 8 of 45. Bad news gets worse when Matt has most of the race to gain bonus leader laps. His points lead may become close to insurmountable if this continues much more in the season.
The rest of the race was Matt Stevens followed by fellow vets Tim, Chris, Brian and Melissa, while the rookies battled for 6th through 8th. These next few races should have more drivers (a few special occasions and parties took their toll on our driver count today) – and while one would think that the more drivers on the track helps Matt keep out of victory lane (percentile-wise), Matt laughs, scoffs and licks his chops at new drivers to devour. And nobody ever shows up that can stop him. Local tracks or points beyond.
