Another kart with a long, convoluted history, the L&K Small Engine #04 / Ruggio #02 / Woolworth #88 / Good Guys Barbershop #88 / Gleason #29:

2007-10

The L&K Small Engine #04 was a retired Thunder Island kart that was originally rebuilt and raced by Larry Phillips, who owned and raced it at Galletta’s Greenhouse Backyard Speedway between 2007-2009, and Oswego Speedway Kartway’s Gas Stocker Divison between 2007-08.

2011

After a wreck shook him up, Larry felt that age, and unrelated health issues were too much for him to continue racing, so he sold it to Kenny Lindsley III. Krazy Kenny, fresh out of a few years in the Marines (where he claimed to break a wolf’s jaw with his bare hands during his stint after seeing a coyote on the track the night before Klassic) renumbered it #14, raced it in the 2011 Klassic, almost fought with Kelly Miller over restart methods, got his bell rung in a rather odd accident, then quit and put his kart up for sale — a rather eventful single race in it.

2012

Then Billy Ruggio purchased the old Dann #68 and the Lindsley #14 and numbered them both #02. However, Billy rarely raced the kart — he preferred the former Dann kart’s feel and handling. Here’s a rare shot of it time-trialing for the 2012 Klassic 200.

2013-14

The Eric Woolworth era began when Ruggio sold the kart, and Eric scored a few wins in the kart, more than the previous three owners combined!

Eric then sold the kart to Ryan Palmer, who won a feature and started the 2013 Klassic in it. This is really confusing because…

2015

…then, it was sold back to Eric, and finally to Keith Raymond in 2014. Keith did quite well and picked up a few more wins in the kart, but like prior owners before it, it kept breaking while leading, so he sold it to David Hartpence Jr., who numbered it #79 and won a Fall All-Rookie Race in it.

2016-17

It was sold again to Lee Gleason and renumbered/repainted to Gleason #29. Lee retained the kart for years but rarely raced, and turned down some very handsome offers from a very interested Eric Woolworth to buy the kart back from him.

2023… SMH

According to Eric, who attempted to buy the kart a handful of times between 2018-2023, Lee ran the kart into the ground joy-riding, then discarded or sold it.

Yet again, another kart with a long history at Galletta’s is lost to carelessness, and… actually, no, f*** that… the guy was an extremely rude jerk to all of us at our racing club in this act, as we kindly requested Lee to either join us racing or sell the kart back to an active member of the club — and he was given very generous offers, more than the kart was worth. He allegedly never returned to race, refused to sell, ruined it, and got rid of it.

If that is true? Wow.

This is, once again, why WE DO NOT SELL OUR KARTS. Because if we have them, they are always at the trackside, don’t get stolen, Matt maintains them to competitive speeds and handling, and they are available to race almost every race weekend. Period. So…
