What is it with having the flu and winning? For the 2nd straight week, someone with a stomach bug won the feature at Galletta’s — and while the flu in summer is kinda’ rare, keep in mind how the first person who got it works as a teacher’s aid at summer school and gets sick ALL of the time, and gives it to everyone else ALL of the time (Thanks, Mel! Wash your hands for God’s sakes!). Anyhoo… This weekend, Chris Stevens took the checker in the Galletta’s #4, his 2nd of the season, and padded his lead in the points standings – the first time Matt has not had command of the standings in around 8 years. He broke a string of 10 different winners in the last 10 features, but still, 10 different winners out of 12 ain’t bad. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the 3-way tie for 3rd place with Matt Stevens, Russ Hockey, and Kenny Lindsley III! A really great 10-kart, 45-lap race! This season cannot be any closer. Fearless Fred Collins led 35 laps with Gary Miller, Russ Hockey, Matt Stevens, and Chris Stevens battling back and forth behind him. “You could’ve put a blanket over all of us. We are bumper to bumper out there,” said Gary Miller. Buddy Cottom, who is third in points, wrecked on lap 1, then blew a tire shortly after and, frustrated with his luck, retired. He’s still close to Matt, but he should have hopped into a backup and got back out there – no visitor has been this close to Matt in Galletta’s history, so he shouldn’t give up so easily. And speaking of that 3-way tie:
Here is a shot of the 3-way tie for 3rd place. Matt (left) Russ (middle) and Kenny (right) were too close to call. Yes, from this, it looks as if Russ may have a slight edge, but please keep in mind that the finish line is just inside of the shadow, which is at a slight angle, and Russ was in the process of passing Ken, but at the line it looks too close to award to one over the others. Like the previous week where he barely fell short of tying Melissa at the line, this week he tied and just came short of getting Kenny at the stripe. Matt, meanwhile, snuck in there and tied the both of them. Ken, Matt and Russ were involved in cautions with each other on more than one occasion, so it was a close race throughout proven by this tie. We are considering placing a third, stationary camera on the start/finish line just for photo finishes like this one, as the other cams get great shots of most of the action but can’t quite get that perfect close-up of the close finishes. Matt looks like he snipped them both on one angle, and Russ looks like he maybe nipped them by a bumper on the other… yet Kenny was ahead and may have held them off… aaahh… too close, it’s just a 3-way tie and they divide the points (add up the three places and divide them evenly).
Extra note: Originally scheduled for 50 laps, Ogre angrily demanded only 45 laps because of a threat of rain. Oddly, he missed 5 laps and in a re-count (which, oddly, is a common occurrence), we see that we went 50 anyway! Ah, that silly Ogre! All that foot stomping for nothing! Now for the finale… YAY! I WON! WAHOO!:

DNF = Did Not Finish
DNSU = Did Not Show Up
Au said that Larry did not show up so that he must get the dreaded “DNSU” label for it. “His 23rd Anniversary is a weak excuse,” said Chris. (Just kidding – Happy Anniversary, Larry! We missed you!) Larry replied, “(My) tie rod was broke, and was not going to race, and it was (my) Anniversary, (but) if I had the parts to fix it I would have been there to race.” Chris had to remind Larry that,“Relax, Larry! This is a joke because, well, apparently we are all clowns, remember?!” 😛
2009 Gas Flathead Dirt Karting Championship of Oswego Point Standings:
After 9 combined events at John J. Galletta Memorial Go-Kart Speedway from 6/8/2009 -thru- 8/9/2009.
Our complete Points Standings from the prior eight seasons are found on this webpage.
NOTES: All karts are 1-WD and all Motors are 1-WD 5hp Gas Flatheads with Stock ’90s Carb, shaved head, and select pre-approved Dyno Racing Cams (different weight requires different ones allowed; 94-SS is the standard for light/medium weight groups – AKA anybody under 220 lbs.). This means fast, equal speeds and, cheater-free engine-builders, all for low prices. Two karts so far this season were not gas flatheads (a methanol flathead with raptor carb and a gas stock 6.5hp OHV), and although they were allowed to run and scored their full points, but their placement did not penalize anybody else with the same gas flathead motor, who were scored as if the other motored kart was not there.
