8/31/2009 – Flippin’ Freddy Collins & Rapid Russ Hockey Win Twin 30s! (+YouTube)
Galletta’s Karting Club – 2009 Season, Week 12:
The Gas Flathead Championship Series of The Planet continued on Monday, August 31st, 2009 at John J. Galletta Memorial Backyard Speedway:
(ABOVE) The Freakin’ awesome DVD menu, where every Galletta’s Race has been taped since late 2005 and every Galletta’s Klassic since 1998.
(RIGHT) First on tap was a 10-Lap Rookie Heat. It was won by George Russell, followed by Josh Herscha, Shadoe Russell, and Jeff Tetro.
13 karts lined up for the first 35-lap feature. Eight regular veterans and five rookies with 3 or less races experience. Regular season race start single file, and are handicapped via inverting (primarily) wins and (secondarily) points-per-race, with rookies in the back until they learn the feel of the karts, learn not to spin or wreck, and learn the fastest lines on the track. As usual, the rookies were involved with plenty of cautions and were under the “3-cautions-and-your-out” rookie rule that we started in the 2006 season, but keep in mind – everybody has to start sometime, and patience with rookies can pay off with great veteran drivers. Patience is the key, and the more they race, the more they learn and can keep up with the leaders and compete for wins.
Early on, Larry Phillips led, until Rapid Rammin’ Russell Hockey stormed to the front and took the lead around the midway point, determined to get that win that has eluded him for the previous few weeks of near-victories. He held off the hard charging trio of Buddy Cottom, Matt Stevens, and Chris Stevens for the win. After the checkered flag flew, a freak accident occurred. Melissa Stevens’ throttle stuck and flew off of the track, also plowing Larry into the VIP camera tower in the process. Both suffered a couple of bruises, but otherwise okay. Larry, however, was shaken up enough to take the 2nd feature off.
August 31st, 2009 35-Lap #1 Finish:
1st. Russ Hockey (Hockey #00)
2nd. Buddy Cottom (Galletta’s #5)
3rd. Matthew Stevens (Galletta’s #33)

The second feature was inverted from the finish of the prior. Early on Gary Miller was leading and looking like he was going to take the win, but lapped traffic crashed into him and brought out a caution, and had to be removed from the track for the rest of the race for safety purposes. Gary led for a few more laps, but a wheel must have loosened in the collision and he had to drop out. That left Fred Collins in the lead.
Fred had his work cut out for him, as Chris Stevens, Buddy Cottom, Matt Stevens, and Russ Hockey were all over him (as the above picture clearly shows). But Fred held strong and took his 2nd career feature win!

2009 Gas Flathead Dirt Karting Championship of America Point Standings:
After 12 combined events at John J. Galletta Memorial Go-Kart Speedway from 6/8/2009 -thru- 8/31/2009.
Our complete Points Standings from the prior eight seasons are found on this webpage.
NOTES: All karts are 1-WD and all Motors are 1-WD 5hp Gas Flatheads with Stock ’90s Carb, shaved head, and select pre-approved Dyno Racing Cams (different weight requires different ones allowed; 94-SS is the standard for light/medium weight groups – AKA anybody under 220 lbs.). This means fast, equal speeds and, cheater-free engine-builders, all for low prices. Two karts so far this season were not gas flatheads (a methanol flathead with raptor carb and a gas stock 6.5hp OHV), and although they were allowed to run and scored their full points, but their placement did not penalize anybody else with the same gas flathead motor, who were scored as if the other motored kart was not there.
